Death Records for 1883 New York City

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Death Records for 1883 New York City

Post by hollygianfrancesco »

Hi everyone,
I recently found a death date for my only Uncle I have not been able to track. August 1883 in New York.
He was more than likely the first of 7 siblings who immigrated.
I have no idea if he was married or had children. He was born in 1856, so 27 when he died. I don't know where to find death records from so long ago. Nothing on census records from 1880 to be found, maybe he wasn't here yet?
Name probably spelled wrong, big surprise there.
Pietro Gianfrancesco.
If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate any help.
Thanks to all
Holly

The following link has information about ordering NYC death records. I do not see his name in the index, but you may wish to have a search done anyway.

http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vi ... eath.shtml

To search the online index yourself:

http://italiangen.org/NYCDeath.stm

If he died outside of NYC, but in NYS-you will need to refer to the following website:

http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_records/death.htm

If you don't have luck through the agencies, you might try to find the cemetery where he was buried. I knew my GGM died in 1918, but the NYC Archives could not find her. When I found the cemetery, they had what they called a "Health Department Number." which is the Death Certificate number. Once I had the number, the archives found the certificate right away. I was never able to find her on the ItalianGen listings, ancestry.com or anywhere else. I don't know why!

You are going back further so it may be more challenging, but here is a listing of the NYC Catholic cemeteries -- http://www.cathcemetery-bklyn.org/pages.php?page=58
