Carla

Messina surname is not native to Alia. Salvatore's grandfather and great-grandfather were were from Montemaggiore Belsito, Palermo. It's up the road about 20 miles. My grandfather's grandfather (Cosimo Monteleone) also came from Montemaggiore.

I am distantly related to Francesca Barceloona.
You can also see that the name you are looking for is Granata, not Granita.
Hope this helps.

Here is what I have. (I highlighted Sal's name):

The only information I have that fits your information is:

Rosolino Angelo Guarino., b. October 7, 1856, to Damiano Guarino b. 10/13/1822 and Maria Grazia Aiello b. 9/7/1828, one of eight children born between 1850 and 1861.
married in 1886 to a
Maria Chimento (might sound like keemento)
Unfortunately there were 3 Maria's born between 1850 and 1860.
Maria Chimento to Vito Chimento and Giuseppa Solito 10/8/1851
Maria Concetta Chimento, same parents Vito and Giuseppa, 2/16/1857
Maria Grazia Vincenza Chimento to Santo Chimento and Maria Barcelona 9/16/1851.

My guess is that the daughter of Santo would be the one based on naming conventions in Italy, which means there should be a first born son named Damiano.
The marriage of a Guarino to any woman whose last name sounds like Cemito in the 1880s is this.
Hope this fits.

My grandfather was Santo Guarino. And my great aunt was Mary Grazia Guarino DiSalvo. That points to Maria Grazia Vincenza Chimento and Santo but my great grandmother died in 1933...

Her death certificate says she was 63. I don't know if that's accurate. Ship record says she was 21 when she arrived in New Orleans in 1890 with son Damiano.

I'd love any information!

What is your proof that Rosolino Angelo Guarino m. Maria Chimento in 1883?
If they married in 1883 they probably would have has children in 1884 or 1885.

Per Indice Decennale di Matrimonio 1886-1895, (ten year index), for Alia:
Rosolino Angelo Guarino m. Maria Chimento - 1886 record, #4 (which means they married at the beginning of the year. Their son Damiano was born at the end of the year.
I suppose that you found the record(s) for those two in 1883 and have them on hand. When I checked the index record for them in 1883, I found the only Gs to be Greco and Guccione.
Looked closer at the Indice Decennale di Nato 1886-1895:
Damiano Guarino , Rosolino Angelo Guarino and Maria Chimento 1886 Record # 246
Damiano Guarino , Rosolino Guarino and Maria Chimento 1887 Record # 280

Indice di Morte for 1886:
Damiano Guarino , Rosolino Angelo Guarino and Maria Chimento - 1886 record #189, one of the last of the year.

I maintian that these two people married at the beginning of 1886, had their first born at the end of 1886 who died at birth or as an infant . Got pregnant again and had Damiano ( the second) in 1887.

You are most likely correct. I only have a record, census I believe, that states they married in 1883. Please send me your info. I'm thrilled!

An interesting note: "The first documented proof of a native of Alia arriving in Louisiana is ... in St Anthony's Church in New Orleans. On March 4, 1878, Giuseppe Panepinto, age 26 years, native of Alia, married Nunzia DiMaggio, native of Contessa."

Started looking into this family and found that they had at least one child:
Giuseppa Panepinto, b. 12 Dec 1879

Then, I found this:

Panepinto Wid. Nunzia 24 Ricca Giuseppe 26 02/11/1882

There were a couple of other Panepinto marriages/births in that time period, but I wasn't able to pull anything up for the 1880 census.

It seems more came in the 1890's, including a Frank Panepinto (his wife which may be Angeline and three children) and possibly a brother or other family member (married to Phyllis Ricotta, with one son, who married Anthony Rini). I think they came ca. 1893. There was a connection to Romano family, so it was a possibility. I am in contact with someone connected to the Rini part of the family.

BTW, I am looking into purchasing that Italian-American book. I have seen it before and even copied a few pages of Panepinto, but did not find mine for sure. It might be helpful to have on hand, though.

Hey!

Nunzia DiMaggio and Guiseppe Ricca are my great*3 grand parents! Where are you able to access the records from St. Anthony's church? I would LOVE to be able to see documentation of this marriage.

Warmly,
Lauren

I have ancestors from Alia with the surnames of Todaro and Runfola. Let me know some information about your ancestors to see if there are common ties.

Months ago, someone named Calidon posted information on my family and stated that he could go back four generations. I never heard a word from him again. I'm reposting the info in hopes that someone out there can assist me.

I do not know where he found the records below.
Rosolino Angelo Guarino and Maria Chimento were my great grandparents.

Per Indice Decennale di Matrimonio 1886-1895, (ten year index), for Alia:
Rosolino Angelo Guarino m. Maria Chimento - 1886 record, #4 (which means they married at the beginning of the year. Their son Damiano was born at the end of the year.

I believe Rosolino Angelo Guarino is your ggf.
All information points to that. If you want I can send information on your Guarinos 4 more generations past Rosolino to Mercurio Guarino born abt 1744 died 1802. I prefer doing that by email, rather than posting on here. I think my email address is in my profile.

If anyone out there has access to these records, or feels they can provide information for me to go further back from my great grandparents, I'd appreciate any assistance.

I may hire someone in Sicily but they work off of the info we provide and I'd like to make sure my info is correct before I pay for research on someone that's not a relative.

On my mother's side of the family is the Panepinto family which traces back to Todaro and Sciacca. Our family lives in the New Orleans area. From what I could find out Francesco Panepinto and Joachina (Giochina) Todaro are my great-great grandparents with Jensen Todaro and Marguerite Sciacca being my great-great-great grandparents. That is as far back as I have been able to find. I know Joachina left Palermo, Sicily, Italy with two of her children Congetta (Concetta) and Ignazio and arrived in New Orleans on May 20, 1895. Francesco, her husband, had gone earlier. Their son, Pietro (Peter) came to America later.

I have a cousin on my grandmother's side whose family came from Alia. Their surname was Centanni. Names connected to this include Rotolo, Randazzo, Sciaccia, Todaro. Here is a link to that side of the tree.... http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/3580792/ ... &selnode=1

Also, the images from Alia, Sicily are available on the familysearch webiste. The link is below:
