Do you mean you can't find any data on his/her parents to move back another generation. See if you can find if he/she had brothers/sisters sometimes that has gotten me past since I find parents through another sibling. Otherwise I am like Peter I am not sure what you mean.

I found only ONE ships manifest with the name Benevetta.

When I read it, I found out that they transcribed the name incorrectly.

It should have been Benedetto.

If you could also supply the approx. year of birth, it would also help all who are willing to help you.

Dear MFJP obviously is was a mispelling but there is more here than meets the eye or else the person who made the inquiry could not be that dense and ask such an absurd question when all she had to do is trace the manifest which is what you did and anybody else would do. Peter

buy a book on italian genealogy and start researching backwards. The book is title Italian genealogical records by Trafford R. Cole and it is an easy read. Since your in OZ go to www.naa.gov.au. for OZ archives of immigrants arriving in OZ. Peter

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions and the spelling error. I had found this name on ellis Island. What the name means I don't have a clue. I will be sure to check out the other spelling and see if that gets me an answer.
Thanks again

You need to provide more infomation. What is the family your are researching? What are the first names and the dates? Where did they live...city and state if in the US? How does this name Benvetta link to that family? It is a cousin, an Aunt or Uncle, did someone marry into it? If indeed the name is Benedetto, there are soooooooo many that you must be as specific as possible as to how this individual relates to the rest of your research.

Let us know ans we will see what we can find.

Ok...

A lot of people can relate to your problem. Sometimes they don't talk because they do not think the know anything. Sometimes there is something in the background they do not want revealed. But ususally there is someone...a cousin, and uncle or aunt, a close family friend that might be able to shed some light. You might also consider the following:

Get a copy of death records of family members. Get obituaries when you can. Get cemetery records. The cemetery is often a great place. They can tell you what family is buried in the same plot with your relative. They can tell you who owned the plot. They can give you information on other people with the same family name buried in the same cemetery. All of this will help you to begin to identify family members.

I am sure Australia has a naturalization process like the US does. Were your grandparents or great-grandparents citizens? You do need to identify the immigrant ancestor and dig up everything on that person you can. If they are naturalized, often the paperwork applying for citizenship will give you maybe the place of birth, parents names...I am not sure about citizenship over there.

If they lived in the same part of Australia from many, many years, did they go to the same church? If so, the church might have marriage, christening, burial records that might be of help. Of course, best to start with a date and time and event you know and then try and work backwards from there.

But do check out other people with the same name. They are probably related at one time, but you may not be in touch with today....you would be surprised with what you can find out. Also ask those who do know about to tell you stories about when they were young. Often, it will give you some more info to work with...some nugget that will lead to more information.... where did grandpa work? tell me about grandma...etc.

This can be done. But the more information you can gather in terms of records, the more likely you will begin to ask better questions. Sometimes people say they know nothing, but once you prime the pump it begins to spill out.

I got Aunts and Uncles and cousins together at a picnic and asked a few questions and sat back and listened....you would be amazed!!!!

Hang in there.....keep us informed....and best of luck to you!

I am new at my family search as well, and as suggested, start with your parents birth certificates to get grandparents info, then grandparents birth/death certificates etc if possible. And just keep going back. And forums like this one, or other ones you may find in search engines, you may be able to find a realitive somewhere on a forum.
Good luck
