Finding out about Antonio Petolino

Post by Brusatto »

I would appreciate help finding information about my great-grandfather, Antonio Petolino. His parents were Francesco and Anna Maria Nigro. He was born in San Fele, Potenza, 3 Jun 1848, and married Margherita Pietropinto, born 4 Jan 1852 in San Fele. Her parents were Domenicantonio and Lucia Lunghino. Their marriage date is unknown.
Margherita ( as M) entered the U.S. in NY on 18 May 1885 on the Columbia with their 3 Petolina children: Filomena born 1876, Francesco born 14 Apr 1879 and my grandmother Giulia born 17 July 1881. The children were raised in Newark, New Jersey.
We cannot find an entry into the U.S. for Antonio. He was naturalized 26 Sept 1888 in Essex County New Jersey. Due to the birth of his child in 1881 and his naturalization date, I estimate he arrived between late 1880 and 1883 probably at Castle Garden. They had 1 or 2 more children in the U.S. Maria born 1889 (she married Anthony Radice in 1906) and Rose in 1890. I had not heard of Rose before. I have this and most information from a recently found cousin, the great-granddaughter of their son Francesco. She has visited San Fele and found a little information about them.
We cannot find Antonio or Margherita (or the children) in the Census or any other records. An unconfirmed family rumor says that he found his way to the Boston area; worked on the railroad, and lost a leg in a railroad accident. Vito Pietropinto was a witness at my Grandmother's wedding in 1896 in Newark and he may be a relative.
Thanks for any help you may be able to give. Joann

ok, I have taken a few breaths and read slower this time. I think what I might have is a neice or a cousin to your Margherita. My Margherita was the daughter of Domenico Antonio and Lucrezia Pietropinto. I don't have Lucrezia's maiden name. My Margherita was born Jan 15, 1880 in San Fele.
As for the Radice, I have an Anthony Radice, but he did not marry a Maria.
But I do believe we have a connection further back in Italy.

Amand!! I am continuing my research on my Petolino, Pietropinto, and Nigro ancestors from San Fele. I have neglected it the past 2 years because of my husband's death and other committments, but I hope to gradually get back to it. I have found some minimal information about my Petolino relatives in New Jersey. When I left my San Fele research I was reviewing LDS Family History Library microfiche beginning in 1812. I got to abt 1818. I was finding that there are multiple persons in San Fele named Petolino, Pietropinto, etc. I am sure that Inter-relationships exist and it is quite possible we may have a connection, but I cannot confirm anything at this point.. When I get back to the microfiche I plan to start in 1848 with my Grandfather's birth and hopefully find out more going back from there. I shall be happy to exchange e-mail addresses with you in a private message in the event either of us discover something useful for the other.

I think most of you should sign up for a DNA test from Ancestry.com and get more specific. If matches you directly with tentative relatives. It’s been on the mine so far with us. We had a lot of Petolino’s living in Newark at one time. The East Ward crew and us the North Ward crew. Eventually everyone moved as the city changed. Keep in touch with some of them through Facebook.
