Hitting a brick wall in my genealogy search

Post by Italy#1 »

Good Evening,

I am searching for information on my Great Uncle of Italian decent. I have found a "REPORT OF BIRTH" for Volino-Balina Calabrese. I do not find him on any census, nor do I find a birth certificate or death certificate. How can I find more information? Volino was born on 24 March 1907 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. Any help or hints would be appreciated.

Regards,
Marie

Possible 1910 census?

1910 United States Federal Census
about Tony Calabria
Name: Tony Calabria[Tony Calabris]
[Tony Calabri?]
Age in 1910: 42
Estimated Birth Year: 1868
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Spouse's Name: Rose Calabria
Home in 1910: Chicago Ward 19, Cook, Illinois
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of immigration: 1890
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Tony Calabria 42 head, born in IT
Rose Calabria 28 wife, born in IT

William Calabria 3 [2] son, born in IL
Carney Calabria 9/12 [0]son, born in IL
Sam Norman 42
Philip Stella 37
Tony Kero 28
Sam Capetto 22

I believe this may have been the correct 1910 census because the address is 729 Desplaines Street, while on the birth cert. the address is 334 Desplaines Street..
What do you think about it?

Laura, thank you for all of the information. What do you think may have happened to Volino? I have checked with Mt. Carmel and they have no record of a burial for him. I have contacted the undertakers grandson and he is checking to see if his aunt may have his grandfathers records still. Also I noticed a "Carney" on the census as their son, I have absolutely no information on him.

Thanks again for your help!

Hi Marie, if you check out the original 1910 Census document, the "Carney" actually is "Carmy" and likely short for little Carmella. Of course, why initially called a son in 1910 and then a daughter in 1920 - don't know - but in 1910 only 9 months old could have been misidentified.
Carmella lived to only 24. This death registration actually names her parents' birthplace: Cosenza, Italy. 35 listings in Italian phone book for Calabrese today in Cosenza. More on Carmella here:

Marie,
once it happened to a friend too, then he asked for a better search and they found the burial record... the lastname was so mispelled that they couldn't find it the first time.
You have a sure burial date 19 september 1918 so he must have been buried in that date.... Don't forget it was the "spanish flu" pandemic time, I believe that the cemetery staff was "overburden" ...
