Help with grandmother's birth certificate please

Post by fusedglass »

hello: i have tried various search engines, archival links, etc. My grandmother's name was Velia Unti, born 1898, Manhattan NY. She married Italo Unti (cannot find marriage record), we believe in the United States and more specifically, Seattle, WA.... The problem is Velia's maiden name, as the story is Parisi was shortened to Paris in America. Her father, Paolo Parisi, married Isaura (do not know maiden name) but it may be that Velia is the daughter from a previous marriage of Isaura's. Can anyone help me find her birth certificate and/or marriage record? She died 1999, Mill Valley, CA. Grazie.....carla

Possibly Italo's naturalization index:

Image

Click once to enlarge; click again for maximum magnification.

With the info on this card, you can request Italo's naturalization documents from the National Archives; $7.50 for non-certified copies, $22.50 for certified. The documents may or may not show Velia's maiden name; will definitely show her date of birth.

If interested, start here https://eservices.archives.gov/orderonl ... chives.gov and go ahead and create an account on the right. Next, click "Order Reproductions" and then "Immigration & Naturalization Records"

Response time is often less than two weeks; and there is no charge if they do not locate the record.

When completing the order form, you may encounter fields which demand you enter something even though you don't have the information available; just put X's or 9's in those fields and continue; use the comment box at the bottom of the form for additional details. Be sure to give a valid daytime contact phone number as the archivist will often call in order to verify information or provide additional guidance.

Carla, how certain are you of these facts?

Because she died recently, it should be a simple matter to find her in the social security death index http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi but I am striking out.

If we can find her there, you could order her original SS application which should show her date and place of birth as well as her maiden name...

Here you can see that Velia filed a petition for naturalization (#12165); you should be able to get this from NARA (info in previous post). Once again, this petition should definitely show her maiden name and date of birth.

Now, here is the odd thing: if she was born in New York, why is she naturalizing?

Why is she listed as an "alien" ("AL") in the 1920 census? Why, in 1920 does she say her father was Italian, mother born in New York, but in 1930 she says she and both parents were born in NY?

Okay - they married in about 1920 (see 1930 census, "Age at first marriage" column). According to the laws in place at that time, a US citizen female who married a foreign citizen automatically lost her US citizenship (she gained Italian citizenship at that time); this changed with the passage of the Cable Act in 1922.

Apparently at some later date she filed papers to once again gain US citizenship, this time through naturalization.

thank you so much everyone.....genealogy search is like trying to dig a hold in dry beach sand....i really appreciate your time and effort to help me. I found out that Paul Paris (originally Paolo Parisi) born 1873 Pisa (we think), died 1948 in San Francisco. He was my great grandfather and HIS father's name was Parisi and his mother's maiden name was Bertoni. Well, I digress......i will start looking into the above responses about my grandmother. Grazie.

Her father, Paolo Parisi, married Isaura (do not know maiden name) but it may be that Velia is the daughter from a previous marriage of Isaura's
.

Maybe this 1911 census of Canada is helpful:

1911 Census of Canada

Name: Paul Paris
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Married
Age: 38
Birth Date: Mar 1873
Birthplace:Italy
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Lizzie Paris
Immigration Year: 1903
Tribal: Italian
Province: British Columbia
District: Vancouver
District Number: 12
Sub-District: Vancouver City
Sub-District Number: 31
Place of Habitation: 1653 Napier
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Paul Paris 38 head born in Italy on may 1873
Lizzie Paris 35 wife, born in USA on October 1875
Velia Paris 13 daughter, born in USA on December 1897
Ettie Paris 7 daughter, born in USA on September 1903

Have you noticed that on the Petition for the naturalization of Paul Paris he listed his daguhters's birthdates?

Velia born in NY on 14 december 1897
Ettie born in NY on 15 september 1903

He stated also that his wife's name was Helen born on 15 july 1888, marriage date January 1923 in New York (possible a second marriage?)

possible second marriage from the site:

Paris Paul Jan 24 1923 Manhattan Certificate number 10846
Campbell Helen Jan 24 1923 Manhattan Certificate number 10846
