Lise: Surname of g g grandfather and missing g grandfather.

Post by Marcialise »

I have a query about my paternal sides' family roots. I totally confused with my great great grandfather's surname and the missing person - William Lise I

I once had access to the American Census 1930 and found my great great grandfather, according to my father, called Attilio Lise. I looked at this Census and it says "Attilio Lise". He immigrated to New York, New Rochelle in 1884. He was born around 1862 in Italy (1930 Census and Ellis Island). My father has told me that Attilio Lise made 3 round trips from Italy to America. The problem is on the Census it says Attilio Toia and then there's Josephine Lise (it says this is his daughter, not sure if this is daughter in law?), born in 08 Sep 1894 (Social Security Death Index and 1930 Census matches) and died in Jan 1974 (according to Social Security Death Index). There is no trace of Josephine Lise's husband (apparently called William Lise I ). According to what my father, he left the family permanently (don't know why). So maybe his records might be in the 1900 or 1910 records (I don't have access to these).

Summary

Attilio Toia (my great great grandfather)
Born in 1862 in Italy (there is a rumor that he was from Como)
Immigrated to New Rochelle in 1862 (1930 Census) but travelled to and from Italy 3 times in total)
Arrived in New York on March 16, 1896 (Ellis Island) with no other family members

Josephine Lise (my great grandmother, "daughter of Attilio Toia"?)
Born in 08 Sep 1894, NY or ITALY (Census 1930 and Social Security Death Index)
Died in Jan 1974 (Social Security Death Index)

Kids of Josephine Lise

William II (my grandfather)
Born in 13 May 1913, NY. Died in Jun 1970 (Social Security Death Index and 1930 Census)

Maria
Born in 1914-6 in NY (1930 Census)

Reta
Born in 1916-8 in NY (1930 Census)

Louis
Born in 28 May 1920 in NY. Died in May 1978 (Social Security Death Index and 1930 Census)

William II married Mary Paduano and William III was born (only child) - this is my father.

Do you think I should go to the birth certificate of William Lise II (my grandfather) to check out his parents to confirm name of William Lise I? I don't know where to start.. Maybe I should check with New Rochelle City Clerk about birth cirtificates. It's difficult doing this but I think I will give them a ring as soon as it's 9:00 am in NY.

Here isLISE FAMILY TREE (it's in PDF format). I've been working on this about 3 months.. There's a lot of missing information. I don't know any of my family members in America.. this is such a pity. I don't know if my family was baptised or anything.

I would be grateful for any information.

Wow thank you sooo much wldspirit!

I'm not familiar with "Series: T625 Roll: 1277 Page: 213 " - is this from a special record?

So in fact, Attelio (Attilio) is the real father of Josephine. So Josephine must have had a husband called xxx Lise but haven't located that info. I'm glad I untangled the mystery!

So if I take a look at my gr gr grandparent's naturalization records I'd be able to find their place of birth.

Is this where I need to go?: http://www.archives.gov/northeast/nyc/new_york.html

Do any of you know if there is anything online I could check for naturalization records?
