Okay, so in this document http://www.genealogiafamiliare.it/Brasi ... 0CORSO.pdf, I found this table:

Reading between the lines, as it were, in the 3rd generation we have nonna paterno, nonna paterna, nonno materno, and nonna materna - paternal grandfather, paternal grandmother, maternal grandfather, and maternal grandmother. Okay, simple enough.

In the 4th generation, bisnonno PP, bisnonna MP, bisnonno PP, bisnonna MP, bisnonno PM, bisnonna MM, bisnonno PM, bisnonna MM. I haven't quite figured out the nomenclature yet, but the P's and M's seemingly are used as a means to identify the ancestor as belonging to the subject's mother's side or father's side and the number of letters (PP, PPP, PPPP) determining the number of generations beyond the subject.

The thing I find most interesting is that after an extensive Google search, I am forced to conclude that the authors of this document are the only ones using this nomenclature.

I agree that some of the terms do not seem to agree with the presumed formula, but then we are just guessing, aren't we?

Since no one else that I can find is using this nomenclature, I think the only real option is to contact the author of the document (Clemente Suardi; see the last page for his email address) and ask him directly.
