Lise: Surname of g g grandfather and missing g grandfather.
Re: Lise: Surname of g g grandfather and missing g grandfath
Earlier you posted a link for the archives. That is the correct place to look for naturalization records. I was reviewing dates on census. If he was naturalized prior to 1906 the paperwork may not contain the details of the post 1906 forms. You never know what you will find on the pre-1906 records until you look.

Just email Nara with your requested info and what you know. They will try and look it up for you. Cost $10 to get a copy. They found my grandfather and uncles naturalization papers and sent all for $10 took about a week. Good luck

Thanks mfjp. I've checked out the records (via the link, how did you find these???, there must be a trick?), but I can't seem to locate Radaella and Sgritta withint he passenger list. Am I looking at the wrong bit?mfjp wrote:Not sure if you were able to view this manifest as it is an Ellis mis-link... though I am aware that you know it exists...
Created a link using Image Shack! Nice to see Debbie use it... it can be quite handy... Wldspirit... I will send you a PM..
Passengers with the surname Radaella, Sgritta are from the Colico, Como area.

Actually, I think I found them: I assume they are Sqritta and Radaelli?
But for Sqritta, it doesn't say they are from Colico... I think I'm not good in reading records. Or is this an insider information?

Re: Lise: Surname of g g grandfather and missing g grandfath
You were right on this!!! Wow... amazing. I'm all very excited.mfjp wrote: Passengers with the surname Radaella, Sgritta are from the Colico, Como area.
I went on http://www.familysearch.org and searched for Attilio Toia and I got his parents name as well as his spouse Mary's parents' names. Her maiden name is Radaelli!!! Which makes me think that maybe that Radaelli is somehow connected to Mary. But this is another thing i will investigate later in my research.
So
Father of Attilio Toia : Pietro Toia
Mother of Attilio Toia: Maria Josanna
Father of Mary (Toia): Rosa Resa
Father of Mary (Toia): Giovanni Radaelli
I've checked on some websites about the surnames Josanna and Resa but don't seem to be common. Any ideas?
By the way, thank you all for the support. I don't know what to say! I have to admit it's a great feeling finding ancestors!! Although I need to officially confirm them through records...
Thank you all!
Re: Lise: Surname of g g grandfather and missing g grandfath
I have no idea what those 2 on the manifest were transcribed as... When I did a further search of the surname, I found that a couple + or so came from the Colico, Coma area.Actually, I think I found them: I assume they are Sqritta and Radaelli?
Once I found Attilio Toia's manifest... I decided to check out the passengers above and below his name. You never know... they could be related... that is my thinking... I then checked out Sgritta and Radaella, I found out that this surname existed in the Colico, Como area...
You had mentioned somewhere that Attilio could have come from the Como area...
Here is a map (must be so beautiful there.... )
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?fo ... o&zipcode=
If you really feel that he came from the Como area.... you could try this...
though time consuming... (part of the research process...) you could research the Toia's found in the Ellis Island data base and see if any more came from neighbouring towns...
I found too many coming from Southern Italy... and if you really have time... try checking out some other Toia's from South Italy... that left Italy the same time Attilio did... (1896)...
... no... Castle Garden...if he arrived in 1882 that wouldn't be in Ellis Island records would it?
The manifests prior to 1892 are called the Castle Garden Manifests... and can be viewed by having a subscription to Ancestry .com... which I have. I will certainly check those out a little bit later today... They are not as descriptive as the Ellis Island manifest... but yet very valuable in other ways. There were other ports besides the ones in New York... and they can be checked out too.
If you have a Family History Center in your area, they could have computers with internet connections... with subscriptions to Ancestry.com and you should be able to research from there for free...
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp
Also research from here (using the surname only)
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... search.asp
So... you've got lots to do.... the others who gave you advice - gave you the best advice of all... get those records... it will confirm and identify...
Will get back to you...

I found that Rosa Redaelli that travelled with Mary Toia (her daughter, wife of Attilio Toia) together with other 3 kids named Enrico, Giuseppina and Celestina. Celestina is Josephine Toia (the one that married William Lise I) 's younger sister.
Wow....

Marcialise,
Don't forget IGI records all have to be verified. They are not documents. Some were entered as vital records were transcribed and others from family trees. Either way, documentation to prove the event was not required to enter the IGI record. They are a great souce of information and may prove to be correct, but you need to VERIFY the information you find in the IGI records.
