Last name Mercogliano or Arnoni?
Last name Mercogliano or Arnoni?
I've always thought that my maternal grandmother's maiden name was Mercogliano. She was born in Nola, Italy in 1879. I have now come across her death certificate in Cook County, IL where her maiden name is showing as Arnoni. I'm sure I have the right person, but I can't figure out why the name discrepancy. Also, we've always thought it curious that her maiden name was also the name of a town near Nola (Mercogliano is about 30 km from Nola). Does anyone have an explanation for last name conventions that would help explain this? Thank you.

This may help you clear up this surname conflict. Email Nola using the Arnoni surname and ask them to research her birth act. That should give the names of the parents.
