Passport + AIRE process in NYC

Post by 846newyorker »

Just got my letter of recognition from NYC! It was very quick -- under two months total. Now for the passport.

The website says we first need to register with AIRE before applying for the passport. Is this a needed step for newly recognized citizenship? I have gone to the website but it's not entirely clear. For example, I don't know if I have to mail the information and form in in advance, or if I can do it at the consulate on the day of the passport appointment. Thank you for any help.

Hi and Congratulations!

I had a similar situation this past December :-)

When you went for your interview, you were probably given a form to fill out before meeting with the Consular. That would have been the AIRE form. Take a look at your recognition letter, it probably mentions you've been added to the NYC Consulate AIRE.

All I did was to go to the NYC Consulate website and made the online reservation for a passport appointment. They recommend to make the appointment for a minimum of two weeks from the day you make the appointment. That is they have to run a police check in Italy and it takes about that long to get the approval to issue the passport. Anxious me did it quickly and had to wait for my passport in the mail.

Who was the Consular officer you worked with

Great, thanks. Yes, it appears I have been added to the registry in the consulate and can go ahead and apply for the passport. However, the letter requests I wait a few weeks so that my birth certificate can be placed on file in Italy first. I have made an appointment for the very end of the month, so I hope it makes its way there in time....

I worked with Tony.
