Looking for "Lauro" Family in Gaeta

Post by mistertellyman »

Hello All,
I am trying to trace my family heritage. My father was born in 1899 and grew up in what was then called, Elena, but is now called Gaeta. My grandfather's name was Cosmo Lauro and he was married to Elizabeth.

Is anyone familiar with any "Lauro's" from the Elena area?

Thanks!

This may help you connect with possible relatives in/near Gaeta
Was Elisabetta's surname Mancini? (1912 manifest)
Thanks!

Brilliant! I did not see that (or could not read it)...Elisabetta's surname must have been Mancini!

I believe that her husband, Cosmo (my grandfather), was born around 1870 and came to the USA in 1911. My father never told me anything about his parents so I am piecing it all together now.

My father did not become an American citizen until after I was born, so I am interested in applying for Italian citizenship, but I will need a copy of Cosmo and Elisabetta's marriage certificate and also a copy of my father's birth certificate. I have already sent an email to the comune di gaeta and have not heard back from them. Any thoughts about what to do next?

Grazie,
Bob

Hey Bob!
I'm afraid you're stuck since the records you'll need are kept by the comune. If they do not respond you may want to consider hiring someone to go to the comune for you...

Note: the owner of this website for families from Elena may be able to help - it appears that they have done quite a bit of research
just a thought...

http://gaeta.familytreeguide.com/tree_index.php
The "Piccolo Related" tree is the family history and genealogy of over 3,000 people that I have been able to find that I am personally related to. These are mostly in Gaeta, Italy and the Boston, Massachusetts area. The "Gaeta Non-related" tree is a list of over 10,000 people from Gaeta, Italy that I haven't been able to find a link to my family tree yet. The "Messina Non-related" tree is a list of over 200 people from Messina, Sicily that I haven't been able to find a link to my family tree yet. I have omitted the names of living people for security. If you want further information, please feel free to contact me at rbaron@byu.net. Please check back often because I regularly update the website. Another good website for Gaeta, Italy information and pictures, etc. is: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/us ... S-Defraia/. I also have a lot of family history recommendations that may help you in your research here: http://piccolothoughts.blogspot.com/sea ... %20History

Valarie,
Thank you so much. You have been such a big help. On that ship's manifest from 1912, under column "11", is that supposed to be Elisabetta's father's name? If so, can you read it?

Bob,
It should be her father
I'll take another look
Did Cosmo and Elizabeth have a second son? If they did, traditionally he would have been named for her father.

edit: added

It appears to be Tobia
(Not a common name, but there were over 600 folks with this given name on ship manifests from Italy from 1892-1924 to Ellis Island)

Hi Valerie,
As you know, it's very hard to read the writing on the ship manifest, that's how I overlooked Elisabetta's surname. I can't tell what her father's name was, but it looks like "Reubin". As far as I know, my father was an only child.

Interesting...I never saw those manifests. My father's name was Ferdinando Damiano Lauro, so he was named after his uncle....

Valerie,
I am going to send another "pleading" email to the comune di gaeta to see if someone will answer. I have actually sent two letters via the postal service over the past two years to no avail, but I did not send those letters via "certified mail".

If I do not hear back from my email, I will send another letter through the postal service, certified mail, but with "return receipt requested".
