Wow! This information is great and very interesting. Thanks for the link, I will definitely study up. I after viewing the June 1907 manifest I think I know why I never found in before....I was searching for Vincenzo Loiacono but he may be listed as "Vincenzo Son" in some databases...depending on who is transcribing I suppose.

In any case I think you are correct that the June 1907 manifest is correct (And Vincenzo named his first son Joseph. I actually did study up on Itatian naming conventions ). And the naturalization application you found would mean that in 1918 Vincenzo was living in Chicago, again on Ohio Street. I think that finding the 1920 US Census would really solidify Vincenzo's "US History". I will search for it, and I am guessing that once I determine the Ward/district that that area of Ohio Street was in during 1920 then finding an entry with even a bad transcription/handwriting will not be too difficult.

I also wonder what happened to his father...the WWI draft card you found had an Ohio Street address. So I am guessing that this is the correct Vincenzo. But the card does say that he is supporting a Father and Mother back in Italy. So I wonder if the father returned to Italy at some point.

This is really excellent, that you very much for your help. You have given much new/corrected infomation to go on and also I have learned much about doing this kind of research. It is clear to me that learning more on immigration, naturalization and the overall history of the US and Italy at the time would be very helpful. And also, I need to rely less on programs that automatically provide possible variations of names, poor transcriptions seem to rarely get picked up by these programs.

If I could bother you with one last question...
Can you provide me links to infomation on how I would research Vincenzo's parents which for the time being I will assume remained in Modugno Italy? I would very much like to know if I have family currently in/around Modugno, but I have no idea how to go about starting to look into the family tree in Italy.

Sometimes looking for just a first name with an approximate birth date in a specific location will help with badly transcribed information. On ancestry you can even search using the first three or last three letters of a name with an asterisk ( *xyz or xyz*)
Sometimes including a spouse or siblings can narrow down search results.

Here is a link for finding ED's (enumeration districts) Finding 1920 is a two-step process. You'll need google maps to find cross streets. I tried this last night for your probable 1920 address of 1318 W Ohio and got frustrated. I wonder if you can search by Ward on ancestry? On both birth certificates the address is in Ward 17.

Yes you can search by ward/district on Ancestory. I have done this, the problem I had was the street I was interested was on a boundary between 3 wards. So it took a while to track down as I did not know which ward the address was really in. But, when I finally found the address I was looking for there was no one listed there that matched the person I was looking for.
Anyway, in short, yes, it is doable.

With Italian naming traditions, it is possible to have cousins in the same comune with the same given name - being named after their paternal grandfathers.

First, I located the 1355 and 1148 Ohio Street addresses in the 1920 census by figuring out the Ward and district... I used this site

to determine the ward and district.

There is no one close to having the name of Vincenzo Loiacono at these addresses.

However....if Vincenzo and Antoinette were married in 1920 outside of Cook County IL then he would not appear anywhere in a chicago census in 1920 posssibly.

I mentioned I could find no record of a marriage for Vincenzo and Antoinette in Chicago Cook IL. But I did find one in Lake County Indian in July 1920.

I think they did marry in indiana and this might explain why Vincenzo cant be located in any 1920 Chicago Census.

I have just located with birth record of Pietro Caputo born 1896 in Modugno, Bari, whose mother is Rosa Loiacono, born about 1876. Could she be the aunt of Vincenzo Giacomo Loiancono? Her husband, Carlo Caputo, and later their son, Peter, immigrated to Chicago between 1906 and 1912. At various times the Caputo family lived on Ohio street, although not in the same block mentioned for the Loiacono family.

Any thoughts about a connection?

A belated note here. The 1926 date cited earlier by vj would seem to apply to the filing of the Declaration of Intention (DoI), not the Certificate of Arrival (CoA) or other documents in the process. One of great-uncles was naturalized in 1930; his DoI form was filed in 1925 and his CoA dated 1929, but no annotation was made on his arrival record.

Hello Laura,
I'm guessing you might be my cousin. My father is the Joe in the above post and if by now you have not received the answer to some of your questions, my Grandmother and Grandfather did get married in Indiana because in Indiana you could get married at a16 and not in Illinois. If I remember it was a double wedding with Perry and Jenny Scavo of 1444 w Ohio st. Hope that helps Joe
