I have never heard of this name before, is this another form of Louis or Luigi?

If it was in an old document written in Latin it is a form of Ludovicus, in Italian Ludovico or Lodovico, a very common name, even for women (Ludovica or Lodovica)
And yes, it is the same name as Luigi

It may have been used as a first name but I've known several people with it as a last name.

Yes, Ludovici or Ludovisi. There is also a noble Roman family with this name

My Great Grandmother last name was Ludovici. So it happens I guess. Any ideas where that last name town or commune came from?
