ROVIGO in 1850-1860: part of Venice or Austria?

Good day

I am looking for practical help to retrieve documents related to the birth and/or baptism of my great-grand-father Giovanni VOLPIN from ROVIGO (either the city or province) in the Veneto region in Italy.

Italy was unified in 1861 and my GGF Giovanni was born in or around 1855 when it was not Italy yet, but what was it considered then? The republic of Venice, part of the Austrian empire, something else? The answer could have an impact on where to look for his documents.

So far I have written to the "diocesi di Adria - Rovigo", to cultural centers in the region, but with the data I have they do not seem to be able to locate anything.


We also do not know from where he left in Italy (as Rovigo is in the north, perhaps from Venice or Genova), and where in Brazil he arrived (large ports are Santos in the São Paulo area and Rio de Janeiro).

I am wondering whether people have looked for family member documents around 1850 - 1860 in the same area (Rovigo province or Veneto region), and if yes, where you were successful (local administration, church, cultural group, etc.) .

In case anybody has experience with the search for documentation regarding people emigrating from Northern Italy (ship registries/documents etc.), that would be very helpful as well.

Rovigo belonged since 15th century to Republic Venice - some to read.

Thanks for the messages.

As far as I know, the Volpin family came from Italy and they had distinct Italian and catholic traditions, so I am not sure about the family originating from Russia and/or from a Hebrew background.
it could of course be that e.g. the GF of my GGF came from elsewhere (e.g. Russia) and converted to catholisism.

My GGF emigrated to Brazil (not sure where he arrived though; most likely Santos or Rio de Janeiro).
I doubt that the family arrived in Argentina and then moved to Brazil; I presume in those days, people stayed in the country where they arrived unless they had close family elsewhere, of which I don't have any information.

We think my GGF was born in or around 1855 (he died in Jan-1932 at 77 years of age).
He had my GF in 1902/1903, who was the 5th child of the couple.
We think my GGF started to have children rather late for that time, around 1895 or 1899, taking either 1 or 2 years between each child (the 4 brothers and sisters born before my GF).

i have no real "italian" ancestors.
one of my line from Northern Italy which was once Austrian until 1919.
Trentino-Alto Adige -> South-Tyrol from province Bolzano/ Bozen.
i had to do nothing with this family-line - most done by relatives before.

Is it possible they married in the church in November either in Italy or America so they could live together and then married officially the next year?
