Surname Question - Linguaglossa - Del Popolo

Post by Timmwill »

Good morning/afternoon,

1. Specific person of interest is Edgidia Del Popoplo born 8/11/1877 in Linguaglossa.

2. Had 5 children in Italy Rosaria, Vito, Salvatore, Maria and Giuseppa.

3. First three children had her maiden name as Del Popolo, last two her maiden name as Sgroi?

**QUESTION** (please see attached examples not her but other Del Popolo's in Linguaglossa.

Why would a women have a birth record (these two examples) have a "son of" a Del Popolo listed for each but the child;s surname is the mother's...?? Does the name Del Popolo have a special meaning for an illegitimate child...?

Confused in the States - thanks for any help!

Del Populo means 'of the people' and was a surname often given to abandoned babies.
If the person with the surname Del Populo has a child out of wedlock and declares the child as hers with no father named, the child is given her surname.
Why her surname is different may depend on who declared the birth. If it was the midwife, she may simply be known in town by the surname Sgroi and the midwife just gave that name.
