In an italian birth record it says Maestro before the mans name

Maestro (masculine) and Maestra (feminine) translate directly as "Master" and usually refer to a teacher or other instructor.

I believe in these documents the term may have somewhat broader use; perhaps Livio or Raffella can offer more context.

"maestro" or "mastro" was used to reference people who were masters in their work/art, for instance: masons or carpenters (like "mastro Geppetto" in Pinocchio's tale). I think the word is also used with this meaning (even if at a "higher" level") in English for the "maestro" of an orchestra.
