Re: occupations on death act
I read "taccarellaro" (taccarelli maker) but I don't know what "taccarelli" means. Surely it is an ancient dialect word
Re: occupations on death act
thanks for being able to at least spell it out. i've used a few different search engines and the most i can come up with is that it is a last name!
thanks for your efforts, marcello. maybe others will have some thoughts.

Re: occupations on death act
Following on from our conversation earlier on your other thread, I would agree that the occupation looks like "taccarellaro" although am also tossing up whether it might be "taccorellaro". I've googled both spellings and done the same for taccarelli/taccorelli and like you found they are surnames. Taccarelli is also a town.
Are these people related to your "tagliamonte" people?
Just a couple of thoughts which may (or not) help: the word Tacca means notch, or nick. (Maybe the occupation ties in somehow with your "tagliamonte" people????
Second thought: My parents use to use a word which sounded very much like Tacca which meant "tie".
Interesting and perplexing, isn't it?

Re: occupations on death act
angela,
thanks for your thoughts on this.
this is a new town, Tufo (although it is near to Altavilla, where "my tagliamonte" are from) and how the occupations are noted can be somewhat different. so not only am i getting oriented to how this town does what it does, there is also a new vocabulary to get oriented to.
one more mystery to add to the list!
thanks again,
donna

Re: occupations on death act
You are very welcome for the thoughts - I seem to have a lot of them I'll keep on with my thoughts and come back if I suddenly have a "brain wave".dmt1955 wrote:angela,

You certainly have had some very interesting challenges along the way. Most of my family are either farmers, landowners, or medics and come from the two same towns. Maybe as I go back further I will encounter my own challenges.
one more mystery to add to the list! Indeed, life seems to be full of them!
thanks again,
donna
Kind regards.

Re: occupations on death act
I found just two references to "taccarelli".
A single one mentioned them as some kind of firecracker.
In the others, it is said to be a piece of wood that was put in the mouth of delinquents as a torture, not to let they speak or shout.

Re: occupations on death act
ouch!!
i think i'll go with firecracker makers rather than thinking of my ancestors as torturers of children.
out of all the records i have reviewed in this town (Tufo), those are the only two references to 'taccarello' I have come across.
most appreciative of your efforts, pippo.

When I was a child, we had a lovely little dog, which dad named Taccanella. He trained it to be a retriever. I wish I asked him what the name meant now.
Thank you for researching Pippo
