Cordova/Russo family

Post by FDooks »

Hello, this is Frank again.

I was seeing if anybody had any further information on either my greatgrandfather or greatgrandmother.

Grace Russo:
July 4 1896 - Sept 4 1987

Samuel Cordova:
Feb 25 1893 - October 1964

I believe both were born in Palermo, Sicily.

I ordered some Microfilm from the History Center for various dates so I was hoping I could find parents and relatives of my great grand parents.

If anybody has some information, please let me know.

Thank you.
Looking for information on the names:
D'Amore, DeLuca, Cordova, Russo, Petrino, DiGiacomo

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi There,

I'm not sure if you already have the census information, but here is the information for the 1930 census for Grace and Sam. According to this census, they were both 19 years old when they married. Sam came into the USA about 1905 and was already naturalized by 1930. Grace came about 1912.

Name: Samuel Cordova
Age: 35
Estimated birth year: abt 1895
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to head-of-house: Head
Spouse's Name: Grace Cordova
Home in 1930: Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio
Image source: Year: 1930; Census Place: Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio; Roll: 1843; Page: 27B; Enumeration District: 20; Image: 171.0.

Here is the information for the 1920 Census. Now per this census, Sam was already naturalized by 1917. I would send away for his naturalization records in Ohio. It could list where in Italy he was from.

Name: Sam Curdova
Age: 26 years
Estimated birth year: abt 1894
Birthplace: Italy
Race: White
Home in 1920: Youngstown Ward 2, Mahoning, Ohio
Home owned: Own
Marital status: Married
Relation to Head of House: Head
Year of immigration: 1905
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Image: 298
Image Source: Year: 1920; Census Place: Youngstown Ward 2, Mahoning, Ohio; Roll: T625_1414; Page: 13B; Enumeration District: 165; Image: 298.

This is the best clue ever. Here is the 1910 census. This is Sam's parents. They are John (Giovanni) and Frances (Francesca). Now you already have Sam's parents' names.

Name: John Cardova
Age in 1910: 47
Estimated birth year: abt 1863
Home in 1910: 2-Wd Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio
Image Source: Year: 1910; Census Place: 2-Wd Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio; Series: T624; Roll: 1212; Page: 84A; Enumeration District: 110; Part: 1; Line: 14

Do you know anything about Grace? Do you have her Death Certificate from Ohio to prove who her paretns are?

Wow Trish, your awesome!

I was at my grandmother's house the other day looking through old papers and pictures but did not come across any certificates.

My grandmother passed away in 2000. I just spoke with my Aunt though (daughter of my grandmother's sister) and she said that my Grandmother Grace's mothers name was Carol (Caroline possibly)

I cannot thank you enough for what you were able to find about Samuel. I was looking through all the census' last night and I kept coming blank except for 1930. Thank you ever so much again.

I'm wondering...

Could this possibly be the mother of Francesa Belfiore? I am asking this because of the name as well as the mother's name.

Therefore if this is true Giovanni's daughter would be named after her aunt aka her grandmothers daughter?

That would be incredible if I could just prove this

Hi Again,

First, I have to thank MFJP for being such a doll and linking all the census records for me. Now you can see the actual census thanks to MFJP.

Second, I searched FamilySearch.org. I can't say for sure if it's your Francesca Belfiore for the information came off the film from Foggia. This is not the same town that is on the manifest.

My suggestion to you is to order the microfilm and start searching for a Marriage Act or the Birth Acts of the chilren, etc. This is only way you will know for sure. Remember, you need PROOF to verify all your information.

hope this helps,
Trish

I am not certain about this. I do not believe there was ever a Vincenzo or Celestina that were from Giovanni and Francesca. I noticed the note under Frances' name about immigrating to live with husband Giovanni cordova.
On the census, there was not any indication of Vincenzo or Clestina.

The census is correct though because my greatgpa Sam and his brothers all owned a barber shop. I actually have the picture from Sam when he was only 15 owning the shop!

Maybe I'm just missing something. Thanks!

Hi,

Is this your Samuel? His birthdate is different than the one you posted at the top of this thread.

Plus he is a barber too....

^ That does seem like Samuel. Maybe I had the incorrect birthdate but the years are the same. That reg. card is for 1917 and that would make sense considering my grandmother was born in 1916.

That definately seems like him. I think the date I posted is what I seen from familysearch.org on the death index. I will have to re-check because maybe there was another Samuel Cordova.

On this record posted, does that say Sicily for the birth place? That'd be great to confirm. I do believe trhough this record should be correct. That would give a correct date also! Thank you again!

Hi There,

This bit of information basically goes for everyone on this web site: Remember, on this web site, everything that is given to you is only a "suggestion". It's up to YOU verify the information with proof.

Now to FDooks,

As to FamilySearch.org information ......

Francesca Paola Belfiore
Female
Event(s):
Birth: 22 NOV 1842 Foggia, Foggia, Italy
Christening: 22 NOV 1842

Parents:
Father: Eugenio Belfiore
Mother: Celeste Savino

You won't know for sure if that is Francesca's mother unless you order the microfilm and start doing the research. However, the name did match of Francesca Belfiore and Giovanni Cordova having a child named Celestina and the Francesca Belfiore on FamilySearch had a mother named Celeste. However they were from Foggia. You need Francesca's Death Act to prove her parents' names.

As for the name Vincenzo, here in the USA, he could be called James. This is who James is on the 1910 Census with Giovanni and Francesca.

Also, per the 1910 Census, Francesca had 12 children and only 9 survived. Therefore, you would need to find out what the names were of the children that died. The deceased childrens' names could give you clues also.

And if you look at the 1910 Census, James is a Barber and Sam is working in a Barber Shop.

I do "think" that Giovanni and Francesca are the parents of your Sam, however, you need proof like a death certificate of Sam or his Marriage Application.

Also, if you look at the naming pattern of Sam's children, he does have a Giovanni (John) and a Frances (Francesca).

The Caroline could be named for someone from Grace Russo's family. It could be an American version for Celestina. You won't know for sure till you start getting proof.

I hope this clears some things up for you.

Thank you trish for clarifying that. I would have never thought names americanize so much. I hope to have 100% clarity on the belfiore part very soon because I already ordered the microfilm for my greatgrandfather Sam's birth period.

If that would be correct, I'd be back 4 generations then and that would be incredible.

Thanks again for all the help.
