Raffaele Petruzzi and Filomena (Sullo) Petruzzi

Post by jpetruzzi »

Hello! I am looking for information on the Petruzzi surname? Does anyone have any information? I am trying to locate my great grandparents Raffaele Petruzzi and Filomena (Sullo) Petruzzi? I was wondering if anyone had these two in their family tree and was also trying to track them down. I believe I have a long line of cousins in Italy and would love to visit. The most I have is they had a Daughter, Carmela Petruzzi, 23 in 1913 and a son Luigi Petruzzi age 17 in 1913 who both immigrated to the USA from Naples. Luigi’s draft card stated Castelvetere, Naples, Italy. If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated!

Ciao!

Thanks for your input Marty! :) I am just going by the WW1 draft card and passanger récords it states Castelvetere, Naples, Italy so I wasn't sure if there was a Castelvetere in the province of Naples... But this was also in the late 1800's early 1900's so I also wasn't sure because of the unification of Italy if the provinces were different then from today. But Thank you so much! :) I was leaning towards Castelvetere Sul Calore, AV, Italy.

Petruzzi (sometimes spelled Petruzzo) is also a very common surname in Basilicata (both Matera and Potenza provinces), as well as in Puglia (Salento in particular).

There are Petruzzis in my family, for example, which originated in the village of Anzi, Potenza province.

According to the linguist Gerhard Rohlfs, the surname Petruzzi is of Greek origin. It originated from the Greek surname Petruzsis, which is an affectionate form of Pietro (i.e., Peter).

You can be fairly sure you have some Greek ancestry. Most southern Italians do, of course, from the time when Southern Italy was part of Magna Graecia, but Greek surnames are a particular clue.
