The word "furono" before the father's name is indicating that the father is dead. I would actually say in this case that both parents are dead because "furono" translates to "were" (plural).

(As you probably know, if it had the word “fu” before Domenico's name, this would then indicate that only Domenico was deceased because “fu” is singular.)
