i am trying to determine the mother's first name.

Re: mother's first name on death record
Degnamerita. Only thing it could be. When in doubt, type variations in google until you find a name that matches or google auto corrects you
Italian women seem to have a wide variety of very strange and unusual names, even by modern Italian standards, throughout history. I have encountered 5 or 6 in my family tree.

TIP: When asking for records from Italy, do NOT ask for an "estratto." ALWAYS ask for a "copia integrale." A photocopy of the original Act will contain more information

Re: mother's first name on death record
Hi Donna
I am reading "Degnamarita". This appears to be a name but I had not heard this before.

Re: mother's first name on death record
True, could be Degnamarita or Degnamerita. Although I suspect its just two variant spellings of the same name, like how sometimes the same ancestor will be called Caterina or Catterina, or Getulio and Getullio, or for older records Angelo and Angiolo depending on the record. In all 4 cases, the pronunciation is the same which is what was more important at the time.
I'd find another record to confirm spelling.

I understand what you are saying and basically agree, although I would imagine that there would be a "slight" difference in the pronunciation of the names Degnamarita/Degnamerita?Anizio wrote:True, could be Degnamarita or Degnamerita. Re: mother's first name on death record
It is a valid female first name after a Saint named Degnamerita: http://www.europeana.eu/portal/record/0 ... AA076.html
Re: mother's first name on death record
Slight yes. But considering dialects, the difference would be negligible.AngelaGrace56 wrote: I understand what you are saying and basically agree, although I would imagine that there would be a "slight" difference in the pronunciation of the names Degnamarita/Degnamerita?

Type both names into google translate and click the button that pronounces them. You can hear how they sound. Again do the same thing with Angelo and Angiolo. Sure theres technically a difference, but practically when some 1800s Italians are just casually talking. nah.

thanks so much for this information. so far I learned that Degna means excellent or esteemed and Aug 11, her name day - Saint Degna the Virgin, lived in the 3th century. i look forward to discovering more about this.
i am very appreciative of these bits of information -- they add to the richness of history & genealogy.
