Famiglia Acqua nella regione del lago Como e lago Maggiore

Post by joaoakwa »

I'm looking for records of my ancestor named Giovanni Pietro Acqua. He was born about 1726; and on October 12, 1750 married in Germany in the city of Hochheim am Main, with Maria Anna Weninger. In the record is written that he was Italian and the name of his parents were Antonio Giuseppe Acqua and Petronilla.

According to researchers at the University of Mainz, near to Hochheim am Main, most Italians who migrated to the region of Mainz, in Germany, came from the cities of region of the Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, as Como, Sondrio and Chiuro.

Could you help me find this Acqua family in baptism, marriage and death records of the parishes these regions? As the Como city.
______________________________
The family would consist of:

1. Father: Antonio Giuseppe Acqua
Mother: Petronilla

2. Son: Giovanni Pietro Acqua (*~1726 Italy - +1789) married to Maria Anna Weninger on October 12, 1750 in Hochheim am Main, Germany.
______________________________

The spelling of the name in Germany later was changed to Akwa or Aqwa.

Best regards

João Vicente Akwa

Hi and welcome! :D
The surname Acqua is very rare and today the Acqua families are few and scattered all over Italy, as you can see in the white pages

I have done a lot of research in northern Lombardy and never stumbled on one.
However the surname Dell'Acqua is tipically Lombard. Any chances that your ancestor dropped the initial Dell' when he emigrated?
Ciao

It is possible that the original writing of the surname has been lost. In Germany, the pronunciation was modified to Akva or Akwa.

Giovanni Pietro Acqua, after marrying Anna Maria Weninger, lived in the nearby town named Hattersheim am Main.

In 1766, however, he migrated with his wife and children to Russia, along with other German families. These families became known as the Volga Germans. Giovanni Pietro Acqua died in 1789 in Russia. My great-grandfather, born in Russia in 1855 migrated to Brazil in 1876, where I live. The name was written differently in various places like Aqua, Acqua, Aqwa, Aqva, Ackva, Akva, Akwa ...

I read an article that discusses the migration of Italians to Mainz in the 17th and 18th centuries. http://www.regionalgeschichte.net/index.php?id=6468 In the article, the following is said:

"... The origin of immigrants born in Italy in Mainz can be difficult to decipher because of the incomplete material on the source. With some exceptions, the Italians, who settled in Mainz came from the Duchy of Milan. Within this region there were two centers emigration: the valley around Lake Como and the mountains of northwest of Lake Maggiore.
The region of the northwest of Lake Maggiore, formed by Alpine valleys, was part of the duchy of Milan but also part of the Swiss Ticino. In the first half of the 18th century, had one part to Savoy-Piemont. Preferred valleys of migration was the Val d'Ossola, Val Vigezzo, Val Onsernone, Valle Maggia and the Val Blenio, which is a bit away from the other valleys.
Most Italian immigrants in Mainz came from the area around Lake Como. This area belonged to the Duchy of Milan, who was from 1535 under Spanish rule, and then in the 18th century, under Austrian rule. Previous research has interpreted the Spanish time as a phase of "senza ritorno" as a period of stagnation and backwardness, in Italy. Therefore, it is assumed in traditional migration research, the fact that poverty, population surplus and the tax burden contributed to emigration.
However, recent studies suggest that the recession that hit the city of Como, in the 17th century, especially not necessarily had a greater impact on small communities along Lake Como. ... "

Looking at the distribution in the map of the surname Luzzani, which was from a family who also lived in Mainz region, there is a large concentration near the town of Pognana Lario.http://www.cognomix.it/mappe-dei-cognom ... ARDIA/COMO When the Acqua surname is sought, are displayed cities of Costa di Mezzate, Pozzuolo Martesana, Milano, Vigevano, and Garlasco. http://www.cognomix.it/mappe-dei-cognom ... /LOMBARDIA

To Dell'Acqua, there are many. I believe it may be Dell'Acqua the original surname written.
