I ended up finding a different line to go through that will still require Luigi's help. I spoke to him today about my situation and he seems certain it'll be a typical 1948 case so I'm now entering the hunt down paperwork phase.

I am going to respond to some of the questions. I am in the middle of the process. Two years ago this fall, I think October, I first emailed Luigi asking about his services. I also contacted a couple people he referred me to as references, one of which has been responding on this forum! Luigi received glowing references and 11 of us in our family decided to go forward with this process. He said more than 12 would likely require two trials.
As I said it was two years ago. I just last week sent the final documents that will allow him to start the translations and get a court date. All documents have been sent via DHL and ONLY DHL per Luigi's request. I opened an online Western Union account and this is how I send him money. It costs about $5.00 a transaction. Western Union contacted me after the first payment and said there was someone in their system with a similar name on their block list and wanted me to verify. I verified and he has received my payments no problem. He has also receive my documents no problem. It costs me about $40 or so every time I need to send docs.
I have a naturalization document remaining to send (my grandmother) to prove she changed her name which is on the back of the document. I had to make an appointment online with the local immigration agency and hand deliver the document to them with a letter requesting and apostille. I haven't seen it since and this will be the last doc to send to Luigi. It is through the Dept of Homeland security and they are not very "user friendly" for lack of a better description.
With so many of us, and we're all a bunch of military brats born all over, it took me ages to get the docs together. On top of that, our mother changed her name unofficially or maybe it was a baptism thing, but her name doesn't match her birth cert. We had to have FIVE birth certificates updated and every state has a different process for this and not all would make the changes the way we wanted them so we have three with one name and two with another. On top of that, our mother fancied herself a year younger and used one year younger on her documents. I had to contact the Florida school archives dept and have them dig up her records from the 1930s to get her mother and father's correct names with hers and her correct birth date to support our case and then get apostilles on these. It has been a journey.
I hope to hear back from Luigi within a couple weeks about the translations and the costs for this and who I need to contact there about them, he has a translator there that he uses and is going to give me her contact info.
As all have said Luigi has shown the utmost of patience with my two years of questions and the utmost professionalism. He is a credit to his country and his profession.

Hey everyone! Today was my first hearing, and even though I haven't been able to talk to Luigi, my case has been updated on the webpage to -- IN DECISIONE CON RINUNCIA TERMINI PER CONCLUSIONALI - Meaning from a post I've read here that the judge has agreed to make a decision and no further hearings will be necessary.
I hope the sentence comes out soon. I've been waiting for this moment for so long!

My first hearing was today as well, but I haven't heard from Luigi. The website hasn't updated the status of my case either. I am going to e-mail Luigi tonight and hope for a response in the morning.

Well Luigi contacted me today saying that the judge requires a 2nd hearing on March 31, 2016. This judge and one other always require a second hearing he said. Back to waiting...

@dojo it's a shame to hear that, mate. Don't worry though, it will be over before you know it.
Luigi mailed me today as well telling me that given that the judge would not require other hearings, this was the last one. Now according to the Italian CIvil Law, no decision is pronounced in the hearing, but the judge now keeps the process in her office in order to write up the sentence, which will be deposited in the Secretary of the Tribunal in upcoming months.
He says the general waiting period for the sentence is 4 months. However, from at least three processes I've read, realistically it takes around three to six weeks. I certainly hope it will be sooner rather than later.

Update: DEPOSITO MINUTA SENTENZA DEFINITIVA. and the status changed to ATTESA PUBBLICAZIONE PROVVEDIMENTO.
