Bonaddio/Turcasio
Bonaddio/Turcasio
Hi everyone!!
Trying to find some information about my great great grandparents from Nicastro. My great great grandmother was born Anna Bonaddio. She had my great grandmother Carmena Turcasio at age 15 with a Giovanni Turcasio. I have no idea, and would love to know what happened to him. When Anna and Carmena came to the US in 1902, Anna was already married to a Raffaele Amendola. They settled in Dunmore/Scranton, Pennsylvania.
I have also heard family rumors that Anna, at some point, left Italy for Brazil to work on coffee plantations. No idea how I would trace that! I'm assuming it happened between Carmena's birth (1888) and her immigration to the US (1902). I do give credit to this rumor because Anna, herself, owned the house they lived in in PA.
Thanks for any assistance!!! Jennifer

For reference, 1902 manifest, lines 28 and 29. Line 30 damaged.

1920 census, lines 77 and 78:

1930 census, lines 81 and 82. Daughter Carmela living with husband Frank Pasarelli and children at same address
http://interactive.ancestry.com/6224/46 ... sePUB=true
1940 census, Anna widowed and living with her daughter Carmella and husband Frank Passarella and family. Lines 67 and following.
http://interactive.ancestry.com/2442/M- ... sePUB=true
Anna Bonaddio Amendola death certificate; unfortunately, parents are listed as unknown; informant son in law Frank Passarella.
http://interactive.ancestry.com/5164/42 ... sePUB=true
Frank was the informant because his wife Carmella, Anna's daughter passed away in 1940. Carmella's death certificate:

Based on Ellis Island immigration records, I believe the correct spelling for Anna's first husband's surname was Torcasio.
Microfilms from LDS only cover the period to 1860 and the Italian Antenati site likewise only has older records. That leaves the option of writing to Nicastro and requesting a copy of her birth act.

Re: Bonaddio/Turcasio
Thank you Biff! While I had this information, it's good to know I'm on the right track. I will write to Nicastro! Any advice on where to write? I'm getting confusing information online when trying to look it up. Thanks, again!
Re: Bonaddio/Turcasio
Shout out to Marty, Tessa and others!
Can you verify where to write for Nicastro records?
From what I've been able to find out, since Nicastro with Sambiase and Sant'Eufemia Lamezia became Lamezia Terme in 1968, records for Nicastro would be requested from the town of Lamezia Terme but, like the poster, I'm a bit confused. I've seen two different city hall addresses--one for Via Sen. Arturo Perugini and another for Corso Numistrano, both CAP 88046.

Jennifer,
Please check this 1910 2 page ship manifest, lines 1 and 5 for Francesco Bonaddio (line 1) going to uncle Ralph Amendola in Dunmore, and Antonio Bonaddio (line 5) joining brother in law Ralph Amendola. Antonio, age 44 born about 1866, is likely Anna's brother. Francesco might be Antonio's son since he lists his nearest relative as mother Caterina in Nicastro and Antonio lists wife Caterina in Nicastro. Both Francesco and Antonio were previously in the US in Pittsburgh.

Leaves brother in law Francesco Bonaddio in Nicastro (looks like another brother of Anna), destination Dunmore to join husband Antonio Bonaddio at Elizabeth St in Dunmore. Also check line 27 for a Giuseppe Chirico going to join cousin Antonio Bonaddio at Elizabeth St.

Prego!
I was born and raised in Carbondale, just up the line a bit from Dunmore. Always happy to help folks with "Coal Cracker" roots.

Re: Bonaddio/Turcasio
If the Antonio Bonaddio (born circa 1865-1869) was Anna's brother and their father Michele was born in Nicastro, his birth record is might be among these online Italian birth records as well as their mother's Maria Spina. Michele Bonaddio and Maria Spina's marriage record would give us their ages and parents' names and make a search easier and help to verify records found.

I might just poke around for fun and giggles to see what falls out.

Re: Bonaddio/Turcasio
LOL! Actually, both sets of my maternal grandparents are coal crackers! My grandfather, Nardozza (from Rionero in Vulture) was from Scranton/Dunmore, too. That's how they met. I will definitely check out those records, too!!
