Here are Racalmuto, Sicily Civil and Church Records 1588 - 1942

Post by rp76226 »

If there is anyone researching family in Racalmuto, Agrigento, Sicily, I have extensive, but not complete, civil and church records from 1588 - 1942, including some 10 year indices. I have photographed them all and organized them in multiple photo galleries (albums) with titles and sometimes with translations. I have records for both my family and non-family. You can access all of them (please let me know if we have common family members) from the following link - https://pumafamily.smugmug.com/Photos-Civil-Records
Navigation Instructions:
After you click on the link, then click on one of the galleries you wish to see. The photos within that Photo Gallery(album) will be presented in collage format in "thumbnail" size with titles and also sometimes with translations. Click on any photo to make it larger. Then you can use the left and right arrows to see the other photos in large size, or click on the "X" in the upper right hand corner or your keyboard Escape key to go back to "thumbnail" size. You can use the tiny down arrow to a horizontal line 'symbol' to download a photo you want a copy of.

Very Interesting. My family is Munisteri Pino. My grandfather was Salvatore and was born in 1888 in Naro but understand he lived in Racalmuto. He emigrated to the US in 1905. I visited Racalmuto a few years ago and saw that there were 5 people in the phone book with the name Munisteri Pino. I also note in your marriage records that there are some Pinos. I do not know if it is the same family.

In my family tree, I have no one by that name. I did create a tree for Racalmuto, Sicily for any Puma surnames and relationships that I found related or not. I found 1 Munisteri Pino person there (Carmela), and three Munisteri (Calogera, Carmelo, and Giocchina) plus 11 Pino people. There was a Salvatore Pino married to a Giuseppa Mule. Based on their children's birth years, he was older than your Salvatore Munisteri Pino. Your grandfather was only 17 when he emigrated here. His ancestors are probably all from Naro where he was born. I too have visited Racalmuto, but only for three hours as I was on an escorted tour that did not go there. Padre Alfonzo Puma, a priest there for 50 years, and my third cousin but he had passed away in 2008, before I arrived in Racalmuto and before I was aware of the relationship. His brother, Salvatore, also deceased, was an opera tenor who sang internationally and is on YouTube.

So Giacomo Puma who was married to Agostina Miceli was the son of your ancestors Giovanni Gaspare Puma and Rosa Longo? Our trees finally intersect. I could add your whole tree to mine now.

Ron,
Something doesn't make sense to me on your list: You have "4/3 Francesco Puma (1659-1704) - Santa Collura (...) Before 1658" and "3/2 Leonardo Puma (1600s) - Vincenza Petralia (1600s) 18 November 1657." Thus it seems that you're saying that the parents of Francesco, who married before 1658, were Leonardo and Vincenza, who married in 1657. Francesco married before he was born?!

Carubia, I went back to my actual Tree to re-verify my list. 4/3 had a typo error. It should have read that the marriage was Before 1688, not 1658. 1688 was the year their first known child was born. We suspect that their marriage took place in another town, not Racalmuto, which would explain why their marriage record could not be found in Racalmuto by the genealogist I hired. He had all 15,000+ Racalmuto church records from the 1600s to the early 1900s, given to him by my third cousin, deceased Padre Alfonzo Puma. He offered to sell me all of them for 230 Euros untranslated, but that's too big a task for me, but maybe not for you. Giacomo Puma is a child of Giovanni Gaspare Puma and Rosa Longo, and was married to Agostina Miceli. He had a brother, Carlo, who was married to Catarina Costa. They had two sons who married two sisters. There may have been other children of these marriages, but I don't know of them. Do you have a Tree on Ancestry.com? My Tree has over 36,000 people on it as I tried to make it relevant to all my relatives, not just my side. Please contact me at rpu9@aol.com and tell me more about your family. Perhaps we can share Tree access.

230 Euros for 15,000+ records? I wish I could get all Ribera church records that cheaply. If I had more than a handful of people in my tree from Racalmuto I'd buy it.

Giacomo Puma and Agostina Di Miceli had a son Giuseppe, born around 1765, who moved to Santo Stefano Quisquina and married twice, to Anna Ippolito and Teresa Nocilla. According to Ancestry, he was the "husband of mother-in-law of 1st cousin of husband of [my] [3rd] cousin 2x removed." (I changed "1st cousin" to "3rd cousin" because Ancestry incredibly doesn't know what the definition of "nth cousin x times removed" is.) So it's not like we're blood relations. Recently I did discover that many of the Pumas in Ribera probably are my blood relations, through the wife Leonora Leo Intogna of Leonardo Puma (b. ~1782), but I need to investigate that more.

I recently made my tree public. It's similar in size to yours, just over 39,000 people, mainly from Ribera.

We have different information on the same person. Here is a marriage record for Giuseppe Puma, son of Giacomo and Agostina Miceli, that shows him married to Giovanna Alaimo (first page of the two page spread, top left, where the red vertical line appears):

http://postimg.org/image/zaut3zsmj/

The interpretation I received from the genealogist who gave me that record read:

"45) 24 October 1784. Giuseppe Puma; son of Giacomo Puma and Agostina Miceli, married Giovanna Alaimo Ammazzalupo, daughter of deceased Giuseppe Alaimo and living Stefana Morreale."

I'm not sure what the name after Alaimo refers to (a previous husband?).

Carubia, here is the updated list of my related Puma Italy marriages:

https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-Jxd3CM/

I moved 23B to become #26 which was previously blank. I had the wrong set of parents on 23B.

Probably this was his first marriage. The 2 marriages that I have info on (from familysearch.org) were much later. It actually says, "Giovanna Alaimo Ammazzalupo, daughter of deceased Giuseppe and living Stefana Morreale," so it could be that she and her father had the double surname Alaimo Ammazzalupo.

Would you send me a copy of the two marriage records and translations that you have for our common Giuseppe Puma? Did those marriages produce children? Right now, I have no children for him. Though a member of Ancestry.com, I am not a subscriber. Therefore, I cannot see your public Tree unless you invite me. If you are willing to invite me to your Tree (and I am willing to return the favor), please invite me through my Ancestry.com name - rp76226.

I don't have a copy of the marriage records - as I said I found them indexed on familysearch.org. And actually, I only found one marriage record, from 1835, but it gives his previous wife's name. There's also his death record from 1837 and that of his previous wife from 1834. As usual there are some misspellings/typos/misreadings (e.g., he is "Giuseppe Pma" in his marriage record but his father in the same record is "Giacomo Puma" and his mother is "Agostina Di Micele"), but it's clearly the same person. I've linked these records to his profile in my tree.

Raimondo and I just investigated and confirmed that indeed that branch of the Puma family in Ribera are my blood relatives, 6th cousins to be precise. I haven't added this new info my tree yet.

Ron,

You have 25 Apr 1920 as the marriage date in NY between Salvatore Puma and Gandolfa Cascio, but the date of the marriage record for them in the NYC archives is 13 Dec 1919. How do you explain this discrepancy?

Easy. They did what they would do in Italy. They first got a civil marriage done, but did not live together as husband and wife until the church wedding which was a few months later. I guess they didn't know that this dual marriage record was not necessary. Their oldest daughter did the same thing in 1941 and 1942.
