My family has history in Italy , I am trying to resolve un answered questions for my 88 yr old mother, , she was told by her mother that her grandfather was adopted by a family that did not want him to have their last name, so they gave him the last name of the orphanage he came from, Vanzago, so if his name is not true , how in the world can i find out about his parent's

Foundlings were usually given a name by the Town Officer who recorded the birth, not by the family who adopted them. So, the best way would be to look for your ancestor's birth record.
