A Missing Capone

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

A Missing Capone

Post by MikeCap »

Hi-

I have a bit of a mystery on my hands. Can't locate my husbands great-grandmother Cosima Capone on any ship manifests. That is her maiden last name. A Capone of THE Capone's according to family lore. It would be fun to connect those dots if that is true!

Her date of birth is apx 1887 (a typo on his naturalization record ruined my chances of getting the real D.O.B.that way :(
She is from Termini Imerese. She married her husband Domenico Crivello (b. July 2,1879) in Termini on September 10, 1903.

His naturalization record indicates they both came to the US in September of 1903. He is in the passenger lists for the Carpathia. But I can't find her.

I can't find her birth record and I can't find their wedding records in any form... (they are available online via familysearch.org if anyone wants to take a gander)

Just throwing this one out to the italiangenealogy.com universe!

thanks

Well, on May 4th, 1904, a couple arrived on Carpathia from Termini:

They were Domenico Crivello and Maria Domenica Cupone.
I don't know if they are who you're looking for.
But looking in Termini records, Maria Carmela's surname seems to be Capone:

Unfortunately, there's no marriage annotation.

wow that's fabulous!
I didnt even see the "Cupone" listed below Domenico Crivello on the passenger list. That has to be her.
I wonder where the name Cosima came from then?? That's what she went by here in all the census records and on birth certificates of her children.

Thank you so much for this, Pippo!

Well, a lot of people had (and still have) their names changed in their daily use.
While today names are written since birth and continously checked, at that time it was common to find official documents with different names for the same person.

So I thought we (YOU really) had figured this all out, Pippo.

And then I stumbled upon this:

I looked at the ship manifest again for Dominico Crivello and Mary Carmela Cupone and saw that they had put down "Antonino Crivello/brother in Massachusetts" as the destination in US.

So I looked him up... found a WWI draft card. and then became VERY confused when I looked left and right... I found 4 draft cards, 2 antonino and 2 dominico, two different wives, same addresses that pop up in later census records for Dominico.

What is going on here and who is the right Dominico. lol  :?

fourth card:

There is a Mary Crivello on one of Antonino's cards too which leads me to think of Mary Carmela Cupone.

Keira,
as to Dominic, as you know he was born in 1879 (but, what's your source), there should be no doubt. Also, wife's name is Cosma, and that should confirm my thought.

I couldn't find an Antoni(n)o Crivello born in Termini in 1882; the one born in 1885 is here:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cat=623546

but he was the son of Salvatore and Mattea Gentile.
So, all we can say by now is that you haven't found him yet, or Domenico told a lie when he embarked.
