Searching for Gradone

Post by hachaliah »

Hi everyone!
I just stumbled on this site and thought I'd register and get involved.

I have been searching for information on the surname Gradone. My great-grandfather, Michaelangelo Benedict Gradone came to the U.S. through Ellis Island. His hometown was Castelvetere. From what I understand, he had six siblings - Olympia, Irene, Alice, Elvira, Arthur, and Rafaele. Rafaele was the only one to stay in Italy. He became the village priest at Castelvetere and was there for his entire life.
I have had the hardest time finding anything on this family - it's as if my Gradones are the only ones EVER!
If anyone has any suggestions, alternate name spellings, whatever, it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

is this your ggrandfather's...
Yep, that's all him.
I've found his U.S. related stuff, but I have had no luck on anything prior. As a matter of fact, I can find very little on any of his siblings outside of the spouse names.
As far as the Ellis Island records go, does anyone have any idea why his mother would have a different name? I have debated the relationship between the two for a while and I'm just not quite sure.
Any other info would be greatly appreciated!

Italian women do not lose their maiden surnames as American women do.
So she would have traveled under her maiden name.

Also, just to clarify, do you need help in tracking down info on siblings here in US? If so, please mention location, spouse's name, any known children and ages.

Have you sent to the town of origin for any records? Searched for available microfilm?

Did a surname search for Italy, the name, with it's current spelling
is few and far between. There are only 17 listings in all of Italy!!

To see the distribution of the name, enter surname in cognome and click on the red arrow to the left of the screen.........this will bring up a map showing the name and location.......

Suanj is our resident expert on surname origins and meanings, perhaps she could shed some light on the subject. :)

Hi Valerie and DeLisa!

also in 1903 Boston maifest, but June 16 Elvira travelled alone to see her father Salvatore:

Too similar from the previous 1903 manifest as it's the same name and place visiting...Father son bothe had name Salvatore or there was an error on one of the manifest? Your thoughts?

Wow!
This is awesome! I need to get myself access to Ancestry.com unless someone would be so kind as to email me a copy of the manifest showing Elivra and Arturo!
Salvatore... Hm... As far as all my relatives say, there were only two brothers, Rafaele and Arthur. I'm going to guess that Salvatore is his father. This is awesome stuff. It's been a while since I had any good leads with any of this - I'm glad i've found this place.
How about this challenge? Michaelangelo's wife's name was Josephine DiNunzio. I can't find her anywhere prior to the 1920 census. Thoughts?
Either that or I wonder where I could go to get some info on Salvatore...

Any luck in locating a ship manifest for Irene or Alice?

Most libraries have ancestry access for free, also, depending on your internet provider, ancestry does special offers for subscription at a substantial savings........aol and ancestry have a deal for $99 for a year...check with your provider and ask........

If you are interested, with the names of the parents, known children and approximate birth dates as well as the town of origin, you can make a request for birth records to Italy, let us know your needs........
