Maffei - Garzotto - Covolo - Maltagliati
Maffei - Garzotto - Covolo - Maltagliati
Hello Everyone!
I would like more information on my grandparents' family names and towns of origin. What I know is sketchy and I'm not sure this is accurate. The spelling of my grandmothers' maiden names may also not be right:
Leopoldo Maffei, paternal grandfather, was from the region of Tuscany, Italy
Felicina Maltagliati, paternal grandmother, Tuscany (?)
Pietro Garzotto, maternal grandfather, was from somewhere in Vicenza, Italy
Anna Covolo, maternal grandmother, possibly Vicenza (?)
I believe they were born in the 1880s or 1890s, but again, I'm not sure. Anyone else with these surnames who may have researched their families more successfully than this?
I would love to hear from you. Thanks.

If you can be a little more specific with birth years and where your family settled, it might help us more find information.

Re: Maffei - Garzotto - Covolo - Maltagliati
Thanks Trish,
Leopoldo could be my father's dad, but I think the Pietro you found is too old to be my mother's father.
But, I'll see if I can do some asking around to some of my relatives. Most of them settled around Pittsburgh, PA after arriving to the U.S.

Re: Maffei - Garzotto - Covolo - Maltagliati
Madonna,
as Trish suggests, manifests are great starting points
maybe Pietro is on the manifest for La Lorraine 29 May 1909
pages 210 and 211
http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 0211%2ETIF
line 7
Name: Pietro GAZZOTTO 27 yrs old
wife is Anna COROLO? (COVOLO)
also line 9
Antonio GAZZOTTO 37 yrs old (brother?)
mother Francela? GAZOTTO
both born in Lusiana? (Vicenza, Veneto)
indicates both Pietro and Antonio are immigrant aliens - that means
there should be an earlier manifest also
Hope this helps narrow down your search

Re: Maffei - Garzotto - Covolo - Maltagliati
Hello VJ,
Yes, that's my family!
Olive was my mother. We called Rinaldo, my uncle, Neb. Mary was my aunt, my uncles were Guido, Ernesto (Nesto) and Leo(n), my only living uncle, I call him Nini, because he was the baby of the family.
Thank you so much.
How do I search back further to Pietro Garzotto and Anna Covolo's parents, grandparets, etc?
I do know Anna's sister was named Ambrosina Presa. She lived in Courmayeur, Aosta, also deceased.

Re: Maffei - Garzotto - Covolo - Maltagliati
Hi again,
First I have to say, VJ - GREAT WORK!!!:)
Now the Family History Center does have microfilm for the town of Lusiana, but it's very limited. 1809-1815 and then again from 1872-1899. On the film you could find Birth, Marriage, and Death Acts of your ancestos, however, since it's limited you should be able to find the Birth Acts of Pietro Garzotto and Anna Covolo.
Here is a link for the film numbers.

Here is the ship's manifest for Pietro. The manifest states he left his wife, Anna Covolo in Vincenza which could mean the Province and not the town for Lusicano is in the District of Vento, Province of Vincenza. Either way, he was born in Lusiano and that is listed on the last column of Page 2.
Sorry VJ, didn't see you already post the manifest, but here it is again.

And if you were to write to the town for information, here is the address.

Name: Peter Garzotto

State: Pennsylvania
Birth Date: 15 Mar 1881
Race: White

I hope this helps,

Re: Maffei - Garzotto - Covolo - Maltagliati
Some discrepencies:
Pietro Garzotto would have been 25yrs old (not 45yrs as it states) when he came over on the La Gascogne from Havre in March 1906. I think they must have written his age down wrong, but that's quite a mistake.
Annetta Gazzotto had an 11 month old child, Giovanni Gazzotto, with her when she travelled over in 1909. Not physically possible, unless we have a family scandal on our hands.
Anna (Covolo) Garzotto was Pietro Garzotto's wife and my grandmother. I don't know if the name would have been changed that much on the ship manifest. What do you think?
Everything else jives, Luciano, Vicenza, etc. but something isn't right.

another place where to find Lusiana civil record is the Archivio di Stato di Vicenza, just to let you know,
bye Riccardo
Re: Maffei - Garzotto - Covolo - Maltagliati
Riccardo,
Thanks. I clicked on the Archivio di Stato di Vicenza, but I don't know what to do next. Do I click on the library or what? Where on the site would I find the Lusiana civil records?
Where do I look for birth certificates, marraige certificates, etc.? I would also like to dig back deeper and find out my grandfather's parentage...who they were, where they were born, etc. Is this the place to find all that? Where do I click? My Italian is not that good.

the Archivio di Stato di Vicenza web site has nothing on line.
You find the email where to send the request for your ancestor birth act.
If you want to go back in the time, you request first your ancestor birth act, so we can read the informations, that will drive us to know your ancestors name, age, job, etc.
If you don't know italian, I suggest you to link to
