This may possibly be Chiara's death record here at No 157
It says that she was the widow of Domenico Masaro/Magaro (need to check the name) in second marriage. Her age was 66 (1783), she was a filatrice, and her parents were the deceased Signor Giuseppe Centonze and Signora Domenica Pace, also deceased. She died on 4 July 1849. Finding the marriage record should confirm that it is the same Chiara.

(I think you are doing great with reading the records, Jen. It 's just getting use to the script and increasing your vocab. There's aways surprises here and thre as well.)

Edit to Add: The second husband mentioned was the deceased Domenico Massaro.

Jan 29 1832 Marriage celebrated in the Cathedral

From the documents presented (page 3) you get that Vitomichele Calia died Aug 15 1811, while Vitomichle's father (name not given) died July 30 1814.
So...I found Vitomichele's father's death. His name is Nunzio (not a surprise)! Spouse is Rosa Milano. Based on his age of 84, he'd be born around 1730. His parents were Michelangelo Calia and Maria Natrella (?)

Love this! I thought that furono might mean both were deceased. Again not surprising since he was 84, they have to be over 100 :)

And I'm going to check out Chiara's second marriage; what a find that would be. So awesome!!!! THANKS!

Happy to help. All the best with finding the marriage record. It could be a bit of a mission. I was going to look at the indices yesterday but the site was slow and it seems to be down at the moment - I noticed though that some indices are missing and the ones that are there are in not so great conditon. There were no records for 1812 and it is quite possible that was the year she remarried - fairly soon after the death of her first husband?

Angela---I was thinking the same thing! Given how young the children were, it is most likely that she remarried soon after her husband's death. It seems indices are missing for the earlier years. they start at about 1820. So, I went forward from there to about 1840, and didn't find the marriage. I'll have to page through the earliest years to see if I find anything when I have time. :)

It's really unfortunate when the indices are missing and especially when the records themselves are in such poor condition, because then you don't have the use of indices for backup. I'll have a little think and get back to you much later. I just need to post something and then clock out.

Marriage Maria Massaro daughter of Domenico and Chiara

Post by AngelaGrace56 »

I've located a marriage record for a daughter of Domenico and Chiara:

Marriage No 84: Maria Massaro and Angelantonio Lorusso
Altamura: 26 November 1842 - married the same day in the Cathedral

Groom: Angelantonio Lorusso, 29, adult, born in Altamura, Pastore (shepherd), living Altamura, Strada La Maddalena, no 22, son of Antonio Lorusso, Pastore, and of Laura Dinna?, living therein.

Bride: Maria Massaro, 22, adult, born in Altamura, living therein, Strada S. Caterina, No 8, daughter of "deceased" Domenico Massaro, Aratore (plowman), who lived in Altamura when living, and of Chiara Centonze, living therein.

From the allegati we read that Domenico Massaro died on 5 December 1841 and that his father died on 22 January 1836:

1841 Death Record of Domenico Massaro:
He was the husband of Chiara Centonze, his second wife, born in Altamura, 68, Aratore, and the son of the deceased Giovanni Massaro, also an Aratore, and of the deceased Maria Boccaccio who had both lived in Altamura when living.

1836 Death Record of Giovanni Massaro, Paternal Grandfather of the bride
He was the husband of Angela Mastromarino, born in Altamura, an Aratore, 85 yo, the son of deceased Domenico Massaro, Aratore, and the mother, who was deceased, does not have her name recorded in the Death Act.

The two young men who reported the death were his "nipoti" which could be either his nephews or grandsons: Vitantonio Mussella, 27, ortolano (gardener), living Altamura, Strada Vincenzo and Gaetano Liberio, 39, calzolaio, living Altamura, Strada Santa Croce.

1820 Birth (No 300) of Maria Massaro, daughter of Domenico Massaro and Chiara Centonza:

Altamura: Born on 12 August 1820 and baptised on 13 August 1820, Cathedral Parish
Father: Domenico Massaro, 40 yo, Aratore, living this town, Strada Santa Caterina, No 6
Mother: Chiara Centonza, Domenico's legitimate wife, 35 yo (1785), living with her husband
(Chiara's death record and this birth record differ by two years which is neither here or there really.)
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0

I also looked at the marriage indices for the years 1817-1819 inclusive for Domenico and Chiara's marriage record, but didn't see. So we know that their marriage must have taken place between very late 1811 and 1816.

OMG Angela...that is SO awesome! You are just the most helpful and kind person. I'd actually had the idea to look for marriages of any of those who might have been children of Chiara and Domenico, but hadn't gotten to it yet. What a phenomenal find! Thank you thank you thank you!!!

You are so welcome, Jen, and thank you for your kind words. I was absolutely stoked to find that marriage record. I looked at the indices only up to 1844, inclusive, and this marriage for Maria was the only one that I found, relevant to Domenico and Chiara. They possibly had children that either died young, didn't marry or married after 1844. As always, I've really loved working on this with you. Cheers.

So, Here is the marriage in 1845 of Vincenzo Massaro. His father is the deceased Domenico Massaro. I'm wondering if this is the same Domenico and a son from his first wife. I don't think so because it looks like the mother, Donata di Giulio, is not listed as deceased...but perhaps you can tell more from the rest of the info. :D

No Jen, this is a different Domenico Massaro. This one died April 1835. When I was going through the records there were at least 3 Domenico Massaro's. You are correct that in this record the mother Donata is still alive. The word before this Domenico is "fu" (singular) literally meaning "was".
