1856 Marriage record translation

Post by Missia »

Can one of you kind souls with the knowledge of the Italian language lend a hand in translating the marriage record from Riccia of Ferdinando Cugino and Nicoletta Pontelandolfo for me?

The style of the handwriting is leaving a lot of it unreadable to my eyes.

I'm especially interested in the names of the bride and groom's parents, their ages and occupations if they are mentioned.

Link to the record from archives that has the document:

Thank you to whomever can help me out.

Welcome to the forum, Missia! :)

Marriage Record No 26: Ferdinando Cugino e Nicoletta Pontelandolfo
Riccia: 27 March 1856, 8 pm

Before the official appeared:

Groom: Ferdinando Cugino, 25, born and living Riccia, a peasant (contadino), the son of Angelo (Cugino), contadino, and of Teresa Carriero, both living Riccia.

Bride: Nicoletta Pontelandolfo, 19, born and living Riccia, daughter of the deceased Domenico, contadino, and of the deceased Tommasina Mignogna?, (who had both lived here.)

Then it lists the documents that were presented in order for the marriage to take place. They are known as Allegati or Processetti:

1. Birth Act of groom born on 15 December 1831.
2. Birth act of the bride born on 14 June 1833.
3. Death act of the father of he bride …. etc

The church marriage took place on 7 April 1856 in the parish of Santa Maria.

You would find the processetti for this marriage here: http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... etti/1856/

Angela, thank you so much for this information!

Is the processetti done for all marriages that take place in a town?

You are very welcome, Missa.

Yes, there were certain documents that were required e.g. Birth Records of Bride and Groom, before the marriage could take place. They might not all necessarily be online though. Other documents that you might find in the allegati are death extracts of fathers, paternal grandfathers, occasionally mothers, and death records of any previous spouses, if applicable.

I didn't actually have a look to see how your ones are set up but often there is a cover sheet at the beginning with the names of the bride and groom, the corresponding number of the Marriage Act, and a number showing how many attachments (documents) are included. Depending on how the records were filmed, they might not necessarily be in any particular order. They can be all over the place. (The actual individual marriage package should be together though.) I hope this makes sense.

Edit to add: I've just had a look. This is what your cover sheets look like: http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... 5.jpg.html

Even though it is at the first image it starts with Marriage Act No 77. The next one is Marriage Act No 78.

The processetti for Ferdinando and Nicoletta start here, with the cover page: http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0

Just remember that the attachments are not the original records, they are extracts or transcripts of the original documents and sometimes there can be clerical error in them, so if the original records are online you would be better to look for the originals. However, it is a real bonus when the processetti contain records/info that are pre- civil records.
