Re: translation please
It is a mix of Latin and Italian of that time.
Marriage took place on Nov 26th, 1616.
The priest was Giacomo Bertuccini.
The groom was Lazero (Lazzaro) di Antonio, born in Castelpozzo, living in Nocetto. Here, "di Antonio" might mean "son of Antonio", rather than being a surname.
The bride was Giovanna, daughter of Latantio (Lattanzio) from Sorgnano.
Witnesses were Marcho (Marco) Marchitti, and Isepo (Giuseppe) Del Moretto.

Pippo
So quick question. Is the written word Latantio supposed to be translated as Lattanzio, as you have in parentheses? Why is the "t" a "z"?

Re: translation please
Because in Latin words the group "ti" followed by a vowel, is pronounced "zi" (I mean the Italian way of pronouncing "zi"). So, when "literally" translated to Italian, such words usually have "ti" transformed into "zi".
For instance, "Latium" ---> "Lazio", "otium" ---> "ozio"

Re: translation please
I just wanted to point out that maybe you've found the origin of your surname, as Giovanna's father might be the individual who passed on his name to all descendants. Unless he was known as Lattanzio Lattanzi.

Re: translation please
I am not sure I understand so the "original" name would be Latanzi? Where did the second "t" come in?

Re: translation please
I mean that probably Giovanna's father name was Lattanzio, just like mine is Giuseppe, and yours is Greg.
Than it became a family name, that was passed on to all his descendants.
As to the single/double "T"...well, priests had to write records in Latin, so they "translated" names from Italian or dialect, to Latin. And they often did that according to how names "sounded" to them in Latin (they had no classical sources for names such as Lattanzio). So, maybe that priest thought that "Latantius" was better than "Lattantius".

Re: translation please
I have nothing to do with this thread but would just like to tip my hat to Pippo for being so generous and helpful with his translations for people on this forum. To me it is amazing that you may have found the origin of someone's surname, that kind of information is just spectacular, well done Super Pippo.PippoM wrote: 01 Sep 2017, 09:17 I mean that probably Giovanna's father name was Lattanzio, just like mine is Giuseppe, and yours is Greg.

My last name is Sarcione, I've read that it may have it's origins from the Saracens, interesting I guess. What interests me more is that in my ancestral commune of Marzano Appio in Caserta, there is the frazione called "Sarcioni", obviously plural of the name Sarcione. I can only guess that it got it's name because a clan of Sarcione's lived there at one time long ago. Also, it's not really a village per se, it looks more like an area of land with a few sporadic homes there and a single road that leads through it.
All of my Sarcione family from Marzano Appio that I have found documents for shows that they lived in a neighboring frazione called Tuorocasale, but i've only been able trace back to mid 1700's since only records from 1809-1865 are available to me. One day i'd love to find out the origin of "Sarcioni" and when my ancestors lived there before being in Tuorocasale. Maybe it was just farm land that they owned, I don't know.
Anyways, sorry to hijack this thread.
