translation/interpretation
I have been able to translate most of this document, however I am a bit perplexed as to the intended meaning of the "figlio di Maddalena di Giovanni Lattanzi". Is it son of Maddalena and Giovanni, or son of Maddalena (daughter) of Giovanni Lattanzi?
Thanks for the help.

Re: translation/interpretation
It is Giovanni Battista son of Maddalena, daughter of Giovanni Lattanzi.
The father of Giovanni Battista is not named.

Re: translation/interpretation
Thank you. Is it typical to do that, say in a case of no father? What would be the next course of action to find the father?
Thanks, Greg

Re: translation/interpretation
Usually it is clearly written that the father is unknown (ignoto). Not here though...
Probably there won't be other documents naming Giovanni Battista's father especially if you know that he kept his mother's surname.
Have you got his marriage certificate? It could be worth to have a look at it anyway.

No I do not have that one. I do know that Giovanni Battista married Francesca Rocca. How difficult would that be to get?

You should request the certificate from the parish where Francesca Rocca was born.

Re: translation/interpretation
I am not sure of that. I can guess that she was born in Carrara as my great grandfather Cialdino Lattanzi was born in Carrara in 1861.

Re: translation/interpretation
I was trying to find the birthplace of Francesca and I have searched the death indexes of Carrara on familysearch. I haven't found Francesca Rocca or Giovanni Battista Lattanzi but there is a Maddalena Lattanzi, daughter of the deceased Giovanni (atti di morte 1878, parte seconda, atto 27). She might be Giovanni Battista's mother. The act itself doesn't seem to be in the collection, but you can request it from the comune.
I had never heard the name Cialdino, interesting. It was surely dedicated to this man:

In 1860 he lead the army that conquered the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and helped unifying Italy.

Re: translation/interpretation
She is the mother of Gio. Bat. and was born in Sorgnano in 19 April 1803 and died in Carrara in 16 Jun 1878. I couldn't find her ( I also search familysearch) but I guess that I have not perfected the searching terms.
Would I request from the Commune di Carrara?
Thanks again, Greg

Re: translation/interpretation
Yes then that is definitely the right Maddalena.
If you ask the "copia di atto di stato civile" to the comune of Carrara they should send it to you (atti di morte 1878, parte seconda, atto 27). Attach a copy of your ID.

Re: translation/interpretation
forgive my ignorance, but do they still require some fee for this. I checked on the website http://www.comune.carrara.ms.gov.it/pag ... ivile.html
but didn't see anything like fees.
Also should I ask for her death and possible marriage certificates?
thanks, Greg

Re: translation/interpretation
No it's completely free. Just ask them to send the document via e-mail.
