Gaetano Simonini Birth Record (Antenati)

Post by mjclayton1 »

Hello, Forum-

The Antenati records are a much bigger challenge for the non-Italian speaker than the "basic" Italian Civil Records normally present. There are more people noted (witnesses, etc), plus the cursive/wiritng is often difficult to render ("bleed-through" ink on the back of pages, etc) . Structurally, would someone please break down this Birth Record for Gaetano Simonini?

Here's what I see:

Date of Record: 9 Oct 1812 at 11:00 P.M.
Town Official: Nicolao Bonnacci (sp.?), parish of Gallicano
Appeared: Sebastiano Simonini (this would be the child's father), peasant, age 23
Presented to: Francesco Saisi, peasant, age 30, and Vincenzo Simonini, peasant, age 26, (both?) born and living in Galliano, were presented a child of the male sex, and that (Sebastiano) has declared to be his son and of Brigida Simonini (the mother), peasant, age 27, born and living in Gallicano
Was born:the preceding day (8 October) at 1 o'clock (at night?) in their home a baby was born and given the name Gaetano

Am I close to being accurate here? What about the "flow" of statements being made? It's easy to pick out the names and dates, etc., but from record to record and town to town, I sometimes wonder if I'm mixing up a parent with someone testifying, etc. I am therefore happy to be "corrected" here and will gladly accept any and all input.

Thanks much.

Just to add to what has already been said:

The official's name: Nicolao Bonaccini.

I would say “in the presence of Francesco Saisi..... and Vincenzo Simonini....” (The declaration of the birth, and the presentation of the baby, was made to the official Nicolao Bonaccini, which was witnessed by Francesco Saisi and Vincenzo Simonini.)

1 o'clock at night would be 1 am.

It seems like you have everything else correct. (These earlier records arn't always so easy to read, and it can complicate things when the witnesses are mentioned at the beginning of the record, like these ones are.) Great job, "Mark".

@Angela
Nell''ora italiana le 24 (o l'ora 0) corrispondono a mezzora dopo il tramonto. Perciò "alla ora una di notte italiana" significa un'ora e mezzo dopo il tramonto.

Thank you. Right now it seems like such a complicated system. (Life wasn't meant to be easy, was it!) I'll have another look at the pdf when my brain isn't so cluttered. I'm sure this topic has come up before, now that I think about it.) Grazie

Happy to help, Mark. I've learned something new here too - not that I've completely got my head round it yet.
