Stato di famiglia

Post by stfrancis »

Im interested in obtaining the family status certificates. My understanding is there are 2 types, including a form of certificate which needs to be "compiled".

Im not sure what exactly i should be looking for, but Im interested in my GF's family (parents and siblings), from commune Afragola (Napoli). Im hoping it will aslo reveal some clues as to when he emigrated to NYC (before 1901) and who are all his siblings.

Also Im not sure if i should attempt this myself as I dont feel comfortable about it especially given the long delays and possibility of making mistakes in ordering them...

I guess my question is what are my chances of obtaining them, and should I use an Italian researcher form the area to apply.?

I found this site, looks like it was just redone in last 2 years...

I did ask a stato di famiglia certificate to the municipality of Mazara, in Sicily, and they answered me they only started to keep those in 1956.
In another small Sicilian municipality they did show me a screenshot from the software they use to manage the civil records (they didn't keep stato di famiglia either for the period I was interested, but they had indexed the records in their software, which was allowing them to see the status of a given family in a given year).
I would start to contact the Afragola municipality just to ask if they would be able to produce a stato di famiglia from 1901.

that would be disappointing indeed. 1901 is not much useful to me since I want to know more about the family before they all or mostly came to NYC.

I think I read in Cole's book it does depend a lot on the commune, and from what I saw some contain very little info, but still useful. I think he mentions the Naples area doing for after 1870 but i cant remember now.

i wont communicate with them cause of the language and i know there are standard form request letters but im not comfortable enough with that.

I have found them in diverse Comunes but they vary greatly. Stato di Famiglia is a document created by the anagrafe for a specific reason. Like application for welfare. Sometimes if they were created before 1936 they were filed by street residence or neighbourhood, or numerically with the corresponding reference number on the persons file card. It wasn't something that was required. Not all towns kept these records, but some even updated them. Try Joe De SImone - ad to the right. He does a lot of research in that area. He might know how things are in Afragola.

ok, thanks doesnt look good!
my understanding there is the Anagrafe and Civil branches....
Is it best to attempt first on my own, or start with a researcher there...

Is there a specific reason why you cannot look into the birth registers of Afragola yourself?

https://www.familysearch.org/search/fil ... cat=974488 1900-1903
https://www.familysearch.org/search/fil ... cat=974488 1903-1905
https://www.familysearch.org/search/fil ... cat=974488 1905-1908

For some initials, they even have a 100 year (1809-1908) index:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/fil ... cat=974488 Ce-L
https://www.familysearch.org/search/fil ... cat=974488 M, T, N-S

The municipality of Afragola should have also the missing letters of the 100 year index.

If you cannot use the above registers or indexes, yes, you may need either to retain a researcher, or try your luck with the municipality.

Ive done all that and much more, but my understanding is the stato and foglio MIGHT contain more information, or somewhat different information, especially looking for departures or changes in status

correct, the B's are missing, and a few others, so it makes it very long, and possible errors in finding all the siblings, and especially if there are several families searched....

also, I have relatives in us census not appearing in the Afragola records, or had their names changed in america...

I know its not necessarily going to answer all the questions, but I always conduct my research for the maximum pieces of information, even the smallest details contained on one type of document and not on another add up to further discoveries or paths to take....especially in my case which has proved to be among the more difficult

What you are looking for is a Foglio di Famiglia created years ago with all the anagrafical information.
IF the town creates a Stato di Famiglia today it will likely just be names and birth dates since they won't have these smallest details today you are looking for. Only a local researcher can get you that, IF it exists at all.
