Military records pre 1906 for Sicilians

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

I am trying to find if Baldassare Licari served in the Italian military prior to his immigration to American. Where do I began searching for records. Grazie.

How old was Baldassarre when he emigrated? Do you know where he used to live in Sicily?
