Hi All,
I recently ordered online birth records for my deceased grandfather and grandmother from NYC. However, the request was immediately rejected as I am not the person on the record or a child. Additionally, the printed form has this: NOTE: Copy of a birth record can be issued only to persons to whom the record of birth relates, if of age, or to a parent or human service organizations.
Is it just that they want the request in writing or is their another route to obtaining these?
Thanks for the help!
Ryan
Any trouble ordering birth certificates from NYC?
Re: Any trouble ordering birth certificates from NYC?
Hi Ryan, Try ordering the birth record through the mail. You will need to fill out the proper form and explain your relationship. Do you need this for dual citizenship? If so, state that in Box 10. You will need to get a Letter of Exemplification (check box No. 11 and include payment of $5. It doesn't say that on the form, but that is the cost). The birth record itself is $15 per copy. You will also have to have the form notarized. The form can be found here: http://www1.nyc.gov/assets/doh/download ... birth1.pdf
Do you have the birth certificate numbers? If not, I can try to help you find them.
Here is general information on obtaining a birth record: http://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/services/b ... cates.page
Make sure you read the instructions carefully.
When were your grandparents born? If it was before 1910, you can order a copy from the Archives, which you can do online.

Let me know if you have questions or need more help.

Re: Any trouble ordering birth certificates from NYC?
Ciao Toni!
Thank you much for the reply!
I do have the birth record numbers, so I know they exist and that should hopefully make them easy to locate.
And they were born post-1910.
I'll follow your steps!
Grazie mille!

Re: Any trouble ordering birth certificates from NYC?
You are welcome Ryan.
Just be prepared to wait. I sent for my mother's and my birth record in early February and was told today that they haven't even gotten to those mailed requests yet! I was also told it could take up to another five-to-six weeks before I receive the records.
There's more steps after that: Getting the County of New York to verify the signature of the clerk on the records and then submitting everything to the New York Secretary of State for the Apostille. Feel free to contact me if you need help after you receive the records.
Good luck!

Re: Any trouble ordering birth certificates from NYC?
Thanks Toni!
My wife and I were married in my family's town in Italy a couple of years ago and had to prep all of our docs for the comune, so we know the pain of applying for documents, then certification, then Apostilles. Ugh.
And my dual citizenship appointment isn't until 2022, so we have time! LOL!
Thanks again!

Re: Any trouble ordering birth certificates from NYC?
Update: Although I thought I followed all the instructions, my mailed, notarized application for my mother's birth record was declined because I needed to include her death record. This information was not included in any of the instructions I read. Just wanted to share that info with you and others who are seeking these records.
Re: Any trouble ordering birth certificates from NYC?
Well, I ordered them around April 7 and still no response and my checks weren't processed. I called today and gave my info. They said they'd look into it. I sure hope I don't hit the same death record snag...
Re: Any trouble ordering birth certificates from NYC?
Well, sure enough, they returned mine as well for not including copies of the NY death certs. Time to resubmit.
