Any chance of getting help finding Croatian records?

Post by Lisapeters65 »

You all have been so helpful in the building of the Italian half of my family tree.
But my tree is lopsided. The other half is Croatian and and Austria/Hungarian. I’ve only gotten as far as my 2nd great grandparents on that side, and that’s from research my Aunt did offline, and she has since passed away.
First of all, I had a 2nd great grandfather named Ivan Novosel (which was a very common name) and his wife was Mary Stipancic (or something similar to that). They would’ve been born around 1860 in Croatia. They had my great grandfather Lavro Novosel in 1881. I’d like to find out who Lavro’s siblings were, and who the parents of Ivan and Mary were, if possible. I know Ivan and Lavro Novosel were common names, but any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Lisa, just seeing this... Wondering what part of Croatia your speaking of.
There's actually a large contingent of Italian - Croates, (from Cherso / Cres) and much of the records for these records are available on family search. Most of the records for Italians born in what is now part of Croatia, again the Island of Cherso/ Cres, can be found in the Croatian Church records - mostly written in Italian (occasionally Latin).

I was able to help trace a cousin's Italain /Croatian side back to the 1500s. Though I'm not related to those lines, they exist on my tree on My Heritage.

here's a link to the Croatian Church books on family search

Croatia, Church Books, 1516-1994 Roman Catholic (Rimokatolička crkva)

Outside of the RC records there are others

Croatia, Church Books, 1516-1994

Religion

Civil (Građanski)
Evangelical (Evangelička crkva)
Greek Catholic (Grkokatolička crkva)
Jewish (Židovska)
Military (Vojni)
Orthodox (Pravoslavna crkva)
Reformed Christian (Reformska crkva)
Roman Catholic (Rimokatolička crkva)
