Paternal Haplogroups

Genetic genealogy is the application of genetics to traditional genealogy. Genetic genealogy involves the use of genealogical DNA testing to determine the level and type of the genetic relationship between individuals.

Paternal Haplogroups

Post by Italia1963 »

I am using 23andme.com dna test which shows the maternal and paternal haplogroups.

Are paternal haplogroup only passed down through the father or can you get your mother's father's paternal haplogroup passed down to you?

The reason I am asking is that I am genetically matched with a mother and her daughter on 23andme. The daughter and I have the same paternal halogroup, which I thought would mean I am then related to her father, but when the mother took the test (for some reason, it does not show her paternal haplogroup) it says I am related to the mother as well. Or does this all mean I am related to both the mother and father?

I am not familiar with 23andMe but to me paternal haplogroup should be based on Y DNA which only men have. Not sure how they predict this for a woman.

Thanks for the reply.
That is what I thought (paternal only shows for men). I am guessing that maybe this particular female relative had a brother or maybe her father take the test and just wrote down his haplogroup number as her own.
