Accent marks
Accent marks
Hello, do accent marks (or lack of them) matter to the consulates when they compare records. For example, if Italian certificates contain grave mark in a surname, would it matter or not whether US records contain the surname without the grave mark? Or, is it understood that with or without the mark, it is the same surname? Thank you.
Re: Accent marks
I cannot imagine that it would. Everything I have read talks about significant changes to the name. So, for instance, my great grandfather was Arturo and he began going by Arthur. It is pretty clear that Arthur is an "Americanized" version of Arturo. If he had started going by John they would, understandably, have questions and want to see a legal name change. I think the same is true for accents. Especially int he late 1800s and early 1900s accents in American names would not have been at all common so they likely would have just been dropped. That shouldn't be a stumbling block.
