Asterisk in Birth Record - Paolo Mazza

Post by mjclayton1 »

Can someone please interpret the asterisk shown in this record, both relative to it showing on both pages of the record? Typically, I've seen that when there are two wives noted, but this record is confusing me. At this point, my loose summary is below.

Record No. 62
Dated: 11 April 1889 at 9:00 AM, in the town hall of Saponara Villafranca, appeared Antonia Campagna, age 33, scrubwoman? (lavatrice) in this town, to declare that at 8:15 AM on 9 April of the current month, in the house at 98 ____ San Sebastiano, to (mother) Maria Patti, of (living) Francesco_______ spouse of Pietro Mazza, of Paolo, laborer, residing with him, presented a male baby given the name: Paolo.

However, the asterisk after Antonia Campagna's age (33) seems to refer to the witness, Antonino Campagna (age 66), on the next page. The asterisk also appears on the 2nd line of the 2nd page of the record - after Francesco Mazza, of deceased Pietro, age 36. I'm confused here. I'm not even sure what it says in between Maria di Francesco _______ moglie a Mazza Pietro.

Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

Mark

If you look at the bottom left as well as at the bottom right of the page you will discover that the asterisk means that the clerk must indicate the profession or the condition of the person. (* S'indichi la professione o la condizione)

Hi Livio. My gosh, I don’t even remotely have a fraction of the experience/ability that people like you do here, but I can’t believe I missed that side notation. Thank you for pointing out the “obvious” to me! Also, for filling in the blanks as to the translation - and then some. All in all, very much appreciated.

Mark,

The norm is for the father to report the birth. Usually when a midwife (or other person) reports it, there is additional text at the end of the record (like this one has). Listed in that text is usually the reason why the father did/could not make the report himself. I've seen a variety of reasons--off on military service, working in the USA or elsewhere etc.....

I'm on kindergarten level Italian reading and I usually look for the word 'perche' (because) with the reason following. I can't decipher the hand writting well enough here to find an explanation.

In this case the father was "out of town" (attualmente non trovasi nel comune). The record does not specify why he was out of town.

Grazie Professore Livio!

I will add that to my reference notebook.

I'll write it down just after today's lesson:

Vedi Spot
Vederlo correre
Corre veloce

All kidding aside, I know I'm only one of very many that appreciates the education given freely by you and all the others here!

Thanks, Nick and Livio, for the added color here. Im not using Google translate for this, but I'd think that "attualmente non trovasi nel comune" means "actually not found in town". Or something close to that.

"attualmente non trovasi nel comune" means "in this moment (currently) is not in town"
