Would like to request military service records - Where to Start??

I am interested in requesting my great grandfather’s military service records. I know his exact date and place of birth, parents’ names, have his birth record, etc. If I want to learn more about any time he may have served in the military, what do I need to request and where do I need to send it?

I believe what I’m interested in is the Registro di Ruolo and I would need to contact the Provincial Archives for L’Aquila. However, I just want to be sure that I’m doing thing the correct way.

If you know he was in the military then request the FOGLIO MATRICOLARE. The Registro di Ruolo is just a list of eligible men in the province.
