#377 Salvatore Fricia

I am having trouble reading the part where the mother's name usually is - is it saying the parents were unmarried?

Thanks!

On October 23, 1906 appeared Antonina Morello, age 18, homemaker, domiciled in Augusta who declared that at 3:07 p.m. on October 22 in the home on Via Epicarmo, a male child was born of her legitimate union with Giuseppe Fricia, age 27, trader, resident here, and the child was given the name Salvatore.

Thank you!
Do you know if it was common for the mother to appear instead of the father for recording a birth? This is the first one I've run into like this.

I don't see it often, but it happens from time to time, most often when the husband is away. His occupation is listed as a trader, so possibly he traveled some. Births were required to be recorded fairly quickly, so if he was away when the birth occurred, she may well have done it for that reason. I have a great uncle whose birth was was recorded by my great grandmother in the early 1880s and there is a notation that she was making the declaration because her husband was working in the countryside, far from town.
