Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Interesting bit of history about Italian immigration to Venezuela...on September 13, 1874, Il Circondario di Barletta published an article, "Emigrazione Pel Venezuela," written by Girolamo Cantelli, the Italian Minister of the Interior. He warned that the government of Venezuela was forcing citizenship on immigrants "to remove them entirely from the protection of the Consulates of the their country and have them at the mercy deprived of the right of complaint." The following year, the Venezuelan congress formally declared all foreigners within its borders to be citizens of that nation.
