Hello. I believe I have found Baptism records for both Vincenzo Giordano and Provvidenza Colletti Lanza, both born in Chiusa Sclafani, Palermo, Sicilia. Can I please get a translation on both? For reference, here is a passenger manifest with both of them traveling together: https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/74 ... 3961/facts
PROVVIDENZA COLLETTI LANZA BAPTISM RECORD
Bottom left: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2046915
For Provvidenza's, my questions surround how her name is spelt differently (Providentia) and can someone make out the parent's names? The father should be Giuseppe or Joseph, not sure what the mom's name would be. According to records, her birthday is June 24, 1900 so that adds up. And any idea as to why she has two last names - Colletti and Lanza? This is similarly stated on the passenger manifest above.
VINCENZO GIORDANO BAPTISM RECORD

For Vincenzo's, similarly his name is spelt differently (Vincenti), and his parents should be Giuseppe and Maria Gendusa, which I believe it states here. And he was born abt. 1892 (see manifest) so the date here adds up.

Hello!
The reason why you find names spelt differently (though it can happen anyhow), is that the record is written in Latin, and so names are "Latinized". Sometimes you might even find Latinized surnames.
She was born on day 23 and baptized on 24, father is Giuseppe, and mother ws Josepha (Giuseppa or Giuseppina) Caronia. Her complete name was Provvidenza Maria.
In Italy do exist "double" surnames, for various reasons. They are often consequences of adoption of foundlings, or, conversely and for instance, of children of women from noble families on behalf of a brother who had no heirs, and wanted to keep surname living.

Re: Chiusa Sclafani Baptism Records
Thank you, that is very helpful. And wow, a lot to look into to find out if she was adopted or was from a noble family. I found a few records of siblings that all have the double surname, so I doubt they were all adopted, but I guess you never know.
Regarding Provvidenza's record, is the Colletti name from the mother and Lanza from the father? So her father would have been Giuseppe Lanza and her mother Giuseppe Caronia Colletti, with Giuseppe Caronia being her first name? And is there any other info in the records I should know of, or is that basically it?

The first person who got the double surname might be her father, or some older ancestor.

Got it, so full names of her parents would be Giuseppe Colletti Lanza and Giuseppa Caronia, correct?

Oh and also at the bottom of Provvidenza’s record it states someone by the name of Antonina Colletti Lanza - who is that referring to?

Re: Chiusa Sclafani Baptism Records
She was Provvidenza's Godmother; it states she was not married, and Antonino's daughter.
It is possible that she was Giuseppe Colletti Lanza's sister, or even his aunt.

Re: Chiusa Sclafani Baptism Records
Hi there,
One of my ancestors is also from Chiusa Sclafani, and also a Colletti-Lanza (which I didn't think was particularly common, in general-- let alone from the same area, around the same time). Wonder if there may be a relation?
Her name was Antonia (Ana), and born in 1888. Left to the US in 1907. I believe her father was Antonio.. and that she had a brother (several siblings, but the one I have heard so far, was Salvatore (sam)).
