Here's another child born to Placido Mazzu and Maria Tumolo. I wasn't sure of the spelling of Maria's surname. I'm still reading Tumolo. Her age doesn't seem to change!

Birth No 16: Antonino Mazzu'

Registered Montalbano, 29 January 1860
Born 28 January 1860, 8 am

Parents: Placido Mazzu', 27 yo, bracciale (day labourer), and Maria Tumolo, his wife, 17 yo, living with her husband in Montalbano.

Antonino was baptised 30 January 1860, Chiesa Madre

Thank you Angela, I have a few questions maybe you can answer:

1. Is the name Chiara a female name?

2. As you can see Placido appears as the father in many of the posts I have had translated. He appears acccording to these posts that he was born between 1832 and 1834? I searched the online records for these years and do not see his baptism. So either I missed it, he was baptized in another year or the record is not there. Any advice where I should look? I will continue looked at later years 1835 on on. I do notice some years are missing? Do you know why some of the years for baptisms would be missing? If they are not online is it possible there are available at the archives? Is so, where would the actual records be located - what city/town?

Thank you again for your help.

Yes. Chiara – female name. Chiaro – male name. Generally names ending in "a" are female, and names ending in "o" are male. Names ending in "e" can be either.

Unfortunately you have some key records missing. That could be for various reasons. I also searched the birth records from 1832 to 1837 but couldn't see his name in the indices. In fact, there may have only been one Mazzu' baby born during those years, which makes me wonder whether maybe the Mazzu' family originated in another town???? Not sure. This would need to be researched further. I also looked for Placido and Maria's Marriage Record, which would include Placido's parents but that also isn't there, and I went through to 1910 looking for his death record, but he must have died after 1910? (You really need to know where he was born, and who his parents were to be certain you have located a correct birth record.) I also looked for Maria's death record hoping to learn more - from their son Nicola's 1872 death I'm understanding that she was possibly a foundling – but she also most probably died after 1910.

Thank you again for your help.

Sorry I can't be of further help with this. It's a bit tricky with limited records. Maybe someone else can suggest something we haven't already tried.

I will keep on looking. According to family recollections his father came from Polistena Calabria and married a Campuse from Polermo. The Campise family owned a drug store at the famous four corners in Polermo. His father worked for the forestry department and was transferred. Perhaps Placido was born in Pilistena? I am thinking the record you translated for Antonino Mazzu. Whose parents were Santo Mazzu and Tomaso Campisi May be a clue or even Placidis parents. Family stories also said that Placido had a brother Andreas and Antonino. More mysteries to uncover

Interesting. Thanks for the added information. I'd figured that Mazzu' probably wasn't a name from the town so this helps to confirm. I think that the Antonino Mazzu' record was the only "Mazzu'" birth that I had come across during those years that I had looked through.

Also, Maria's surname does not appear anywhere in the town either, although I'm 99% sure that she is a foundling, and if so it would be a "made up" or "given" surname, anyway.

Here's Tommasa Campisi's death record. Her dad was a pharmacist, which ties in with your story about the family owning a Drug Store. Santi Mazzu' was already deceased so must have died before 1866, as I didn't see his name in the indices 1866-1878.

She died yesterday, so 7 April 1878, in the house in Via Sarro, No 34, aged 70, occupation industriosa, resident of Montalbano, and born said place, daughter of the deceased Placido, a pharmacist, and of the deceased Antonia Manganelli? who had both lived in Montalbano. Tommasa was the widow of Santi Mazzu'.

This is wonderful information. I was excited to see this. A great find. I looked at the records in Palermo to see what was available. I notice the records are devised by sections of the city. If the father Placido Campisi owned a pharmacy, which by the way was called Cavalier Campisi Pharmacy according to family, and the pharmacy was In Quattro Canti on Maqueda Avenue , what section of Palermo would this be? Is there a way to determine that?
Maybe Tommassa Campisi’s birth or marriage is in that section of records. You mention that you thought Tommassa was a foundling. What made you think that?

Yes, I was happy too! :)

Her death record tells me that she was born in Montalbano, but, then again, death records are not always the most reliable. I'm actually on my way out shortly and don't have time to look into this. What I recommend you to do is to put all this information, which is really interesting, on the open forum which gets a lot more interest. There are also quite few volunteers who have their roots in Sicily and have done a lot more research in that area, who will be able to give you expert advice for that area. I had a quick look and noticed that there is still a "Via" Maqueda in Quattro Canti.

Re: Tommassa being a foundling??? I don't think I said this.... I said that Maria Tumolo may have been a foundling. If you take a look at Maria and Placido's son Nicola's 1872 death record it seems to give reference, not sure why, that she was the daughter of "unknown parents". This could also possibly mean that her parents were unknown to the people declaring the death. It just seems odd that they have included that information in her son's death record? I also didn't come across her surname in any of the other indices that I had looked through, but this could also be because Tumolo was not a Montalbano name? Again, further research is needed here.

Nicola's Death Record was translated here: https://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/ ... do#p296186 Someone else might take a look and give their opinion.

Thank you. I need to look over all this and get it all straight in my mind. Between the records and family stories I have been able to construct a good start on these ancestors. Thanks to your translation help. I have a trip to Italy on my bucket list. This will help me to ensure I visit the correct towns for my ancestors
