Stuck on a word in a death certificate

Post by dpv »

Because of this group, I have been able to figure out most of what is a death certificate. However, I found something that has confused me.

Here is the certificate in question.

http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... 0.jpg.html

The way I read it, Margarita Laina passes away on July 30, 1837. She is the daughter of Leonardo Laina and Domenica Carleo.

The two people who serve as witnesses are as follows:

Giovanni Visco, 38, and is "figlio della defunta" or "son of the deceased"

Vincenzo Visco, 40, and is "cognato della ????" or "brother-in-law of the ????"

I have looked at several certificates around this one and that second place where I would have expected "defunta" to appear is always some other word (that I can't tell).

Thanks, in advance, for clearing this up for me.

Thank you, both. I thought it would be something like that -- now I know.

Just one thing I want to mention in case you hadn't noted and that is that the father was still alive but the mother was deceased. Note the word "fu" (was) before the mother's name. If both were deceased you would either see "fu" before both names or "furono" (were) before the father's name.

Thank you -- I will keep that in mind.

Also...I am reading a death certificate now and have a question about the mother of the deceased.

http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... 0.jpg.html

I am trained to look for the place where the mother is listed, but here it has two names. Vittoria Fierro and Giuseppina Visco. What does it say after the information on the father is given?

Thanks,

Don

The deceased is Carmine Scala, who died in his own house and was "born in Petina, profession bracciale (day labourer), born in Petina, son of the deceased Pasquale Scala, profession bracciale, living in Petina, and of the deceased Vittoria Fierro, (who had lived) in Petina, husband of Giuseppina Visco, living also in Petina".

So the parents are Pasquale Scala and Vittoria Fierro, both deceased. His wife is the living Giuseppina Visco.

Edit to Add, in case you are interested:
Just to add: The people reporting the death are Nicola Visco, 32 yo, bracciale, living in Petina, brother-in-law of the deceased; and Donato Zirpolo, 36 yo, bracciale, living in Petina who was an acquaintance of the deceased, (or known to).

Conoscente – acquaintance
