Research the Antonio Vivona Family tree

Post by kmmoro19 »

I have been researching my genealogy family tree from Sicily, Italy. My grandfather, Antonio Vivona was born in Trapani, Calatafimi Sicily in 1893. He emigrated to America in 1907 I am trying to track family back to Sicily before my grandfather. I would like to know more about their lives in Sicily, When they were born, died, got married and what they did for a living. If anyone can help me with this research, I would be appreciated. You can write me to Dmoro1@yahoo.com. My name is Karen Vivona Moro

No reason to get upset. People post questions here to found out about genealogy and specific families and people that can help respond when they can. Not everyone monitors the board every day. This is not a commercial site and any help you get comes from volunteers who choose to help you in their free time. I had not seen this message before. You might check your other thread in the Italian language and translation section where I responded to your post with some things that I hope might be helpful to you.

Thank you for your reply. I am not sure how this site works. Is there any helpful hints to researching on this site or how to use it I appreciate any information I can get in researching my Vivona Family in Sicily.

Thanks again

As for how it works, it's not a site where data is organized like FamilySearch.org, or Ancestry.com. You can search the posts for a name or keyword, but you'll only get topics previously posted. You might get lucky. You can use the search function at the top of the page and just put in Vivona. It's not a super common name, so the number of hits you'll get is probably manageable. You can also post specific questions about an ancestor and in the Italian language and translation thread you can ask for help translating documents. It helps a bunch for you to give as much info as you have. You gave a name, year of birth and probable location. If you know the specific date, that helps, as in small town Sicily naming patterns often caused there to be several people of the same name, often born within a few years of each other. If you know the name of one or both parents, put that down. If don't know the parents' names but you know siblings names, put that down. If you don't know the parents' names, but know the children's names, put that down. With naming patters, sometimes that helps lead you to the parents. Something posted with minimal info is harder to research and when you post minimal info, you may get fewer people willing to tackle it. That said, I responded to the post you made in the other thread at the link below.

I am still looking for the marriage record for Antonio Vivona and Francesca Arisca. They would be my fourth great grandparents. They probably got married in mid to late 1700"s. Their son Bennedetto ( 3rd great grandfather) was married on September 30, 1804. I believe Francesca was from Alcamo, Sicily but I am not sure if they were married in Trapani, Calatafimi Sicily or Alcamo.. Benedetto was married in Trapani, Calatafimi I believe. I am at a standstill in my research until I can find out more information.

Thanks

Hi Karen,

There are many Italian birth, marriage and death records at this site:

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it

When you enter the site, click the link that says "SFOGLIA I REGISTRI." You'll see a big list with columns; near the bottom of the 3rd column is "Archivio di Stato di Trapani." After you click on this, another page will open with two choices; choose the one on the left that says "Stato civile della restaurazione." A page with 3 columns will open; at the top of the 2nd column is "Calatafimi(oggi Calatafimi-Segesta)." Clicking that opens a page with only two choices, "Diversi" and "Morti." Unfortunately, there are very few records for this comune at this site.

A few clicks earlier, on the page "Archivio di Stato di Trapani," the other choice is "Stato civile italiano" which takes you to later records. If you click it, a page opens with three columns; the 2nd choice in the 2nd column is "Calatafimi." This will take you to more records ("Nati," "Morti," etc.) dating from 1878 to 1912.

That's way different than the original information you requested regarding the ancestry of Antonio Vivona born in 1893. As I mentioned in the other thread that you started on the same subject at https://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/language/49463
the data seems to indicate that they were in Caltanissetta in the late 1800s, but appeared to have marriages and births in Gibellina earlier.

Something important to understand is that Trapani is a city, a comune, and a province. All the references to Trapani that you mentioned earlier appear to be related to the Province of Trapani, which includes Gibellina, Alcamo, and Calatafimi. I have found nothing in the earlier data that you posted that indicates a tie to the Comune of Trapani. The birth, marriage, and death records are normally recorded in the comune. Benedetto, if married in Calatafimi, would have been married in the comune of Calatafimi, Trapani, not Trapani, Calatafimi. It's an important distinction in that (based on the data you provided earlier) it's unlikely that there are records related to this family in the Comune of Trapani. Mostly you're looking for records in the Comunes of Calatafimi and Gibellina, and, from your latest post, apparently Alcamo.

For records that early, your best results will likely come from church records. The civil records in Sicily generally started somewhere between 1805-1824, depending on the comune.

Yes, I originally requested information on my grandfather, Antonio Vivona born in 1893 in Calatafimi, Trapani, but I am trying to research further .My grandfather immigrated to US in 1907 with his fther Mariano. I found some ancestors on Family Search (marriage records) but I am stuck on my 4th great grandparents, Antonio Vivona and Francesca Arisca. But I believe Francesca Arisca was from Alcamo and I am not sure if they got married there. Most of the marriage records I found were in 2 churches in Calatafimi, Trapani, San Giuliano and San Silvestro. I would also like to find birth nd death records of my ancestors, starting with my grandfather. Not sure how far back I can go. Would like to know a little about them, what they did, how they lived etc.

Thanks for all your help so far.

Some things that might help find more info on them:

- You have a specific date of marriage for Benedetto, September 30, 1804. What record does this come from? Knowing what document shows this might help find others.
- Do you have names and birth or marriage dates for the children of Benedetto? When they marry there are are documents filed for birth and death records for parents and sometimes grandparents. In quite a few comunes there are online marriage attachments where you can view extracts of these documents for parents and grandparents, so Benedetto's children might lead you to more information on his parents.
- Do you know the names of the churches from which you found the marriage records you reference? I'm not clear on what records you're talking about. You mentioned that they were from two churches, but you mention four cities, so I'm not sure where to look. There are lots of churches in Trapani, and even in a place as small as San Giuliano, there are multiple churches. It would help to know the names and dates of the specific records you have found.

Is there anyway I can attach something to you? I have made an excel sheet on all the marriages I have found on Family Search. That may help you and also see what I have. The 2 churches I have found were San Giulano Martire and San Silvestro di Papa. I am assuming it is in the Calatafimi-Trapani area They have microfilms that I searched through to find the ones that I have. Benedetto Vivona's son was Antonio Vivona and he is married to Leonarda Accardo (2nd great grandparents) They were married in San Giuliano church on October 14, 1828. Thanks for any information you can give me. I really appreciate all you can do.
