Dear all,
I’ve encountered the abbreviation ”patr.” before the name of an ancestor named Cangemi in a church archive document in latin. I’ve been advised that it may mean ”patronum” indicating ownership of a boat, or patrician indicating holding some city-office or social rank. The two interpretations I’ve been offered seem very different. Very grateful for any advice! Thank you.
Abbreviation: ”patr.”
Re: Abbreviation: ”patr.”
Please post an image or better still a link to the record, because without context it is very difficult to answer your question.
A single word can have many meanings; for example in a Baptism record patr. before the name means he was the godfather of the baptized child

Re: Abbreviation: ”patr.”
Dear Paola,
Of course, I'll attach the record. It's a record of a marriage. The father of the bride Giuseppe Cangemi has a word before his name that a professional researcher in Sicily told me was to be read as "patr", even though for me personally it´s very hard to read. At least it looks like it begins with "P" if compared to the writing of the same letter used for the name "Pampalone". Thank you very much for your help! Ciao Daniel

Re: Abbreviation: ”patr.”
Where is this record from?
If it is from a town by the sea in Sicily, my guess is "prn" for "padrone", like "padron Ntoni", the main character of the famous novel "I Malavoglia" by Giovanni Verga, where "padrone" stands for "owner of a fishing boat".

Re: Abbreviation: ”patr.”
It’s from Castellammare del Golfo, right on the sea. The interpretation of fishing boat owner would therefore make perfect sense. Thank you for your interpretation of ”prn”, very helpful!
